How difficult is replacing control arm bushings?

I have a 71 ltd convertible and I need to replace the right front control arm bushings. How difficult is this? And where can I find the parts?

Thanks,
T.J.

I've never done anything with the control arms but you should be able to get the bushings at any parts store like Autozone or Napa.

TJ, replacing the bushings is not difficult. I did a ‘78 Merc (same type A-arm) in about 50 minutes. If you’re alignment was set ok before the bushing wore out just mark the location of the arm (along the inner shaft) on the frame with a pencil as a reference for re-installing the arm. Raise the car under the lower arm. Place jack stand under frame. Remove tire, leave the shock in place; loosen ball joint castle nut to end of stud; put something under upper arm and lower the jack under lower arm; hit the spindle knuckle (where the ball joint stud goes through spindle) to release the ball joint from spindle. Unbolt arm from frame. You may need to tie the spindle so it will not hang on the brake hose.

You will need to support the A-arm on two sides to knock out the bushings. You can use a chisel or a punch. I prefer the punch so as not mark up the inner shaft.

The bushings have a shoulder for orientation(location into A-arm). Install one bushing, insert inner shaft (remembering which way it goes) and second bushing. To install the bushings you will need a large deep well socket of a piece of pipe to fit the metal lip of the bushings.

I got a bushing set from Napa. I reused the inner shaft.

Torque everything to specs and you’re good to go.
