Purchasing a 67 Galaxie 2dr, $500 damage to rear bumper and deck lid, worth it????

I found REALLY close to my house a 1967 Galaxie 2 dr that someone backed into a telephone pole. Damaged the rear deck lid, bumper and kinked quarter just a smidge. The rest of the car is in really good shape. (Needs some frame attention by the front of the drivers door). Interior in I'd say good-toward really good-shape, 289 auto with Power steering. I always wanted one of these and never had one. Now looking to have it and just do the work. Also needs a tail light by the way.

Questions are: How easy is it to find parts, Ease of working on, value????

Any help appreciated. Guy wants $500 for the car so, really can't go wrong......RIGHT?????

Don

Would appreicate a call if anyone is up to it to discuss the car further.

Sounds like it is worth it to me. I have a 67 2Dr hardtop with vinyl roof, 289, ps, so sounds like similar car. Parts are pretty easy to come by either at Dearborn, Macs etc. I love mine!!!

'67's are cool cars...I love Scott's, but the fact that the damaged one you mentioned needs front frame work caught my eye. If we're talking rust damage, I'd offer a lot less than 500 bucks. I know that many of y'all fix rotted frames and are ok with them, but a good solid frame is mandatory for any car I buy.

Don,

Just make sure you consider the time and the cost to complete the repairs for damage as well as any rust located in the back half of the trunk. (check the area between the fender and the trunk down low by the wheel wells.) Other good areas to look include bottom of the doors, underside on the front of the hood (bottom side of where the hood trim mounts). Frame damage can be repaired and is not that difficult with the correct tools as long as it is not to bad.

A car that age will need a lot of TLC, time and money. However, all of this can be a lot of fun too.

Parts are not to bad to come by, a good deck lid is a little difficult since it is unique to the two-door car. Not sure what your junkyard resources would be like around there. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

here is my 2 cents If you always wanted one BUY IT .I would offer $300.00 ( flash the cash) , but I agree at$ 500.00 you cant go wrong. If it is not going to be your main transportation you can take your time working on it, you might find another one with a great body, no motor/trans, or interier and piece it together, and if worse comes to worse you can part it out a good 289 alone will get you $500.00

I agree with Sleepysal. If you decide you dont want to finish it, you can part it out.

Well, bought that Galaxie for $400 today. Found out that there was 4 like new American Racing rims with centers in the trunk that came with it!!!!! Not bad in my opinion. I have a few questions that I will pose to you great folks for some friendly advice.

I'm really glad that I found this forum since, my knowledge of older cars is mostly in Mechanical. I also noted that the car also came with two new taillights (one I need), and over $2 in change in the ashtray. Already a home run!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice and hope to talk more in the future.

Good Luck with it!! Sounds like you have a good start. Who knows what you will find when you pull the back seat out.

How is the frame? If it's rotted I woulda passed it up. My first car was a '67 Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop with a 289 and FMX. Great car, but the frame was rotted out. Lasted me a good two years before I noticed the rear end moving around through turns (from the frame being rotted out so badly back there). It was great transportation for two years, a lot of fun, and a great learning experience.

Anyway, congrats on your purchase. Where at are you in NJ? I'm in the Cherry Hill area. If you're local and ever need any help with the car I'd be happy to offer a hand and whatever experience that may be of use.

By the way, I have a '68 Galaxie 500 two door hardtop now. If you know where Fuddruckers is on Rt. 42/Black Horse Pike a little ways past Camden County COllege (coming from Philly) they have a cruise night every Friday starting around 6:00. I'm there just about every Friday with my '68. I'm the only one with a Galaxie, so I've been trying to get some other guys from teh area with full-size Fords to go, unfortunately not many people around here have Galaxies. For being such a popular car back in the '60s they are pretty rare. I see far more '62-'64 Gals than the '65-'68 models, but even then not too many of them.
