64 Galaxie C6 trans swap from cruis-o-matic. HELP!

I'm swaping out a Z-code 390 auto with a 67 t-bird 2 barrel 390 w/C6 that only has 2500 miles on it.. So far everything looks ready to go except for the shifter linkage. On the 64 cruis-o-matic trans, the shift arm pivots in the 11 o'clock verticle positon about 1.875 center to center. On the 67 C6 the shift arm hangs straight down with a 3 inche center to center.

I would like to keep the stock 64 shifter but I don't want to spend time pulling the engine out again to modify the shifter arms. It would be easy to weld the C6 ****er arm so the arm is in the up 11 o'clock position.

But maybe this swap works without any modifications. Has anyone swapped in a C6 and could you give me your war stories. Thanks, Sam.

By the way the C6 is the same lenght and the driveshfts swap also. Is there a problem with the trans mounts?

64 Galaxie C6 trans swap from cruis-o-matic. HELP!

Haven't done this swap yet myself, but here's a good article on the mod you're talking about. Hope it helps.

64 Galaxie C6 trans swap from cruis-o-matic. HELP!

There are alot of different shift arms for a C6. Depends on if it was a column shift or floor shift. I don't remember what I used on my '63 Country Sedan but the '63 column shift linkage worked fine with just a little adjustment. The tranny mount on a C6 is about 3" farther back than on a Cruiso. I cut the ends off of my crossmember and welded them back on and added gussets. That way I left the frame mounts in the stock location. That way if I ever wanted to put a four speed in all I would have to do was get another crossmember.

64 Galaxie C6 trans swap from cruis-o-matic. HELP!

For the 64 I got two simple plates from the link below for the X member relocate. For the shifter I bought the Lokar set up, with it all my positions on the column index right. I boot legged the Ranchero when I added the C6 floor shift box to a cable column shift, made my own bell crank and tacked it to the selector shaft. After alot of math it works but not a perfect index.

64 Galaxie C6 trans swap from cruis-o-matic. HELP!

Thanks for all of your help. I guess I thought it would be easier to install this C6. I really want to put a 4spd in this 64 so that my ”X“ won't be able to drive it.

But this is what I found out. I may be wrong but it looks like a C6 with a shift arm that hangs down is from a column shift car and a C6 with an upright shifter arm is is for a floor model.

This 67 C6 was the same lenght as the 64 Cruise-O-Matic and the drive shaft was interchangeable. The trans mount was about 4" back on the C6 but you'll have to measure. And I'm not sure about the speedometer gear swapping.

I'm going to go with this Cruiso untill the 5-6spd is delivered. I've seen some FE's with a tremac trans. Anyone have any luck with this smallblock trans? Thanks again for your input, Sam..
