64 Lower A-arm removal, could it be any harder....

OK lets see if anyone has a easy way to pull the lower a-arm on a 64 galaxie. I was able to drive out (hammer) the rear pivot bolt but the front one has me stumped. It's the only bolt left holding this a-arm on. I almost need a gear puller. Any Ideas...

Seems like I remember someone here saying that the one is threaded and has a retaining nut or something. I've never done it myself...yet anyway.
I'll see if i can find it, it's in this board somewhere. I think in a discussion about disc brakes.

I think the front bolt that goes into the frame is threaded, and screws into the fitting on the frame. The fitting screws into the from of the frame, and the bolt screws into the fitting from the other side. I've got both pieces laying at home on my work bench, I'll take another look at them tonight.

Once you have the rear bolt out of the control arm, fold the arm under the car next to oil pan, this will allow the rear of the control arm to drop and clear cross member. Slide arm off front pivot bolt. You may need to persuade it a little. Replace the arm the same way, but, because new bushings will make it a tighter fit it may take just a bit more persuading to reinstall. I just did mine a couple of months ago.

Hope this helps,
Norm

64 Lower A-arm removal, could it be any harder....

Thanks for your help everyone. I have the front end totally apart except for the front bolts on the lower a-arms. If I have to force these guys off then so be it. The upper ball joints were still rivited on so you know this car hasn't been touched in 40 years.

Whats the deal with the 1 7/8" nut on the front end of these pivot points. Will it do me any good to try to take these off or should I just force the a-arms off from the inside.

Good thing I've got the engine out right now.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sam....

I took mine off by taking the 1 7/8" off with a big breaker bar and it was easy to get the a arm off after that. the 1 7/8" is screwed in to the frame and the offset shaft is screwed in to it when you put them back in make sure that you don't screw it all the way in or it won't rotate like it,s suppose to.

I just did mine. You need to take the 1 7/8 inch bolt out. I used a long (24 inch) breaker bar with a pipe extension to get the torque to undo it from the cross member. The eccentric shaft screws into the 1 7/8 inch bolt but the eccentric shaft should not be tight.
