'64 Galaxies came with two rear end housings...one to accomodate the large axle bearings and one the smaller. Which had what varied on what motor the car came with. I'm certain that 390-up (maybe the 352-up?) cars came with the large axle bearing housings. The 8 3/4" center section Deb mentioned is simply a 9" with a smaller ring gear. If your present axles are of the small outer bearing variety, Deb's should work just fine. Both are 28 spliners also.

Are the smaller bearings to go with the tapered axle tubes? Mine is a straight axle. Don't have the axle shafts here right now so can't measure then, but the OD of the bearings was about 3inch.

Rick I don't know on that one. Neither the 9" nor the 8.75" have tapered housings. Supposedly by the tag the 8.75 has the large bearings also but I have never taken them out to look. In fact the drums have either never been off this rearend or someone actually put the retainers back on the studs that they use at the factory to hold the drums on.

Got the duff axle shaft back, the only marking on it is "COAW" at the wheel end.
Bearing ID is 1 3/8
Bearing OD is 2 3/4 (or damn near, brake plate was flapping about in the way).
So, can anyone ID the axle shaft from the COAW?

Might find some info here. They show a tapered axle for a Mustang but that doesn't necessarily mean yours is Mustang. You need to see if the metal tag is still on your rearend. It will tell more than anything.

The bearing for my rearend is 3" across outside and 2 1/2" inside across center hole. If that helps any. I just measured the spare bearing I bought a couple years ago and haven't gotten put on yet. Not sure what the 8.5 has for axle size or anything though.

The bearing itself is only 1/2in thick? That seems a bit thin?

This one is almost an inch thick. When I went to get bearings there was a smaller one that was maybe 1/2" thick also for the smaller bearinged axle. I saw it and said whoa, that isn't it, mine is a monster in comparison. So there is a big dif between the small and large bearings.

Only two different size axle bearings for a '64 full size Ford. And none of the housings had tapered tubes. The bearing book[?] at the parts[?] stores should list them and tell what they fit. I think all 28 spline axles were the same diameter it was just the housing that was a different i.d.
