I have a 66 galaxie 500 4dr with a 352. My question is how do i find out what tranny i have. My reverse went out and i got qoutes ranging from 750 to 1250 to rebuild. I looked u prices for a built c6 and i saw it for 750. Can i put a c6 in to replace what i have and to i need different mounts and driveshaft and what not. Mike

If your tranny and bellhousing are one piece then you have a C6, if the bellhousing is removable then it is an FMX. Post the trans code from the data plate and we'll be able to tell what it came with.

the trans code # is 7 i believe. The is a one right next to it but i believe that is the axle code but it isnt directly over the word. so its either 7 or 17. Mike

It is a cruiseomatic/FMX. ALL 352's came with them; 390's got both FMX's and C-6s. Tranny crossmember is different; so is the driveshaft length. There is nothing wrong with the FMX tranny; they were used behind 390 police interceptor motors for years. But if you must change, then try to get all the parts from the same car. (C-6 tranny, crossmember, driveshaft)

the only reason i want to go a c6 is becuase i was qutoed at 1250 for the rebuild. I can get a built c6 for a good price and the drive shaft and crossmember shouldnt be to much. Mike

does anyone know what years are interchangeable with mine. I have a 66 352 4 dr but am not sure what year and model crossmembers and driveshafts i can use. My buddy owns a junkyard so i have easy access and searchability of all junkyards in my area but i need to be specific in the parts that i need. Thanks, Mike

I just switched from an fmx to c6 in a 71 and the crossmember was fine, driveshaft is about 3/4" shorter now though.

I was waiting for someone to respond who has done the swap. I haven't, but I have researched it and here is what I have heard.

You may already know this, but only an FE (352/390/428 ) C6 will fit your engine. The small block and 351/400/429/460 trans will not bolt up.

66 Gal crossmember will work--I think it gets turned around for the C6 (trans mount is further rearward on C6)

Collumn shift rod from trans to linkage will need to be from C6 car. Also if the trans is from a floor shift car the arm on the trans will face down, you need one that faces up.

The C6 is longer and you will need to get the driveshaft shortened. There are also issues with speedometer cable, emergency brake linkage (attached to the trans crossmember).

In my opinion, you should find a 66-68 galaxie with an FE and C6 or else you will be spending as much $$ and time to adapt the C6 as to rebuild the FMX. FYI it cost me $800 for a complete rebuild on the FMX in my '65 galaxie, including removal and installation. You might do some more shopping around if you want to get it on the road with the least amount of hassle.

If you plan on hopping up the engine, go with the C6. If you want to cruise the car, get a better quote on rebuilding your trans.

The FMX is a fine transmission. The bid you have is not low enough. Keep shopping. I had mine rebuilt 4 months ago and it is very strong. I had a little local shop with a great reputation build mine. The owner of the shop rebuilt it personally, then made me come back in 2000 miles and have the filter and fluid changed. I paid $550+tax for the in/out+ rebuild+2000mi. checkup.

Sounds like your fella' has himself a girlfriend/ dragcar/ boat/ big house/ 4dr-dually-diesel-4wd-PU-&-camper/ money-blowing-wife habit to support.

If you DO have that shop do your transmission, be sure to get some deep tongue kissing, too, else you're getting just plain screwed. LOLOLOLOLOL!
