question on drive shaft length

I have a stock auto tranny with my 352 in a 60 Starliner. There is no play in my driveshaft length as it buts up to the tranny. Someone told me I should have at least 3/4" or so play to slip it on or off as it would eventually ruin the seal.

I assume the driveshaft is stock. Any input you can give me?

Yes there should be some play in it otherwise you will bind when the rearend rotates up.Forgot exactly what the figure was but 3/4 sounds about right.
