Please help me with my Tranny problem...

Sorry posted in wrong place
Hello all, I have a 1962 Thunderbird with a 390 in it. I bought this T-Bird with the transmission in the trunk. The tranny turned out to be C9ZP 7006 A which is a 1969 FMX tranny out of a Mustang. I have the stock bell housing that came with the T-Bird but do not have the stock tail-cone. I have been doing my research to find what options I have. So far I have come up with, use the FMX and I would have to make a new tranny mount or find a tail-cone that would work. Would a stock 62 T-Bird tail-cone work? I would also have to change the attaching end (tranny side) because the spleens don’t match up and maybe shorten the drive shaft and have very little upgrade options. Then there is getting the stock tranny that came from another 62 T-Bird which would cost about 1000+ on high end after rebuild and would have no upgrade options but would bolt right in. Last and defiantly not least is a C6, as far as I know I would have to change the starter, tranny mount, dip stick, shorten the drive shaft (maybe), fly wheel and various plumbing. From what I have been reading, the C6 has unlimited upgrade options and is a strong tranny. Even though I would have to get a C6 tranny it would still be cheaper then the second option. What I would like to know is what your opinions are on this. Has anyone on this forum done this, is there more things I will have to change for the C6 and are there any after market tranny mounts that would bolt on rather then me making one? I would like to thank you all in advanced for the information given and to do my part to make this easier for people who want to do this in the future, I will make a Q&A sheet with the info given and post it on the forum.

Thank You
Devin G.

P.S. THX to Mario428 who posted on my last post with some helpful info. I am waiting for approval so I can post on that site.

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but it might help. Back in the '70s, we converted several '61-'63 T-Birds to stick shift for circle track racing. One 4 speed we used came from a '66 big block Galaxie. Other than the tranny mount being different, it fell into place with no driveshaft alterations and we used the T-Bird yoke plus rear U-Joint. So that would lead me to believe, but not with 100% certainty, that the '65-? fullsized Ford FMX or C6 has the same overall length as the MX originally in your 'Bird. That'll at least give you some measuring options.

As to whether the FMX or C6 is better, it depends on what you're planning for your 'Bird. FMX's are tough enough trannys, but expensive to have rebuilt and there's not much performance support. Were I planning to build a strong FE, I'd definitely go with the C6. They eat more horsepower than an FMX, but are arguably stronger and you can buy shift kits, stall converters and such about anywhere.
