Rack and Pinion

I noticed on an earlier post someone was asking about what happened to me! I'm still here making rack and pinions for Galaxies as fast as I can. I've sold about 50 units now. One of your members FAKESNAKE has one on his 60 Starliner. The rack conversion was installed by Andre's Custom and Rods. Andre called me yesterday ( 9/23/04) to tell me he drove the car for the first time and it was great! He could not beleive the difference in the car. The cool thing about this conversion is that you can use your stock power steering pump (I supply all the correct fittings) Andre was really impressed that there was no bump steer at all. I tried to tell him there would not be, but driving the car proved it to him. 3 1/2 turns lock to lock guys, with no leaking rams to contend with. You can also use you stock column. No mods required to the frame PERIOD! Look for an upcoming article in CUSTOM RODDER Andre's is installing one our conversions into a 64 Galaxie convertible.

I'm looking forward to testing out the new set up when I get my car back tomorrow.

So, what clearance problems can I anticipate with my FPA 460 headers if I decide to convert to R&P?

Stan Johnson of FPA is currenly prototyping a set of headers for the FE series engines. I did the first install in late July and the passenger side was fine, the driver's side went in just fine but the collector was too close to the rack boot. Stan is now rehashing the header. The next set we want to do is for the 429-460 engines. I do not know the style of headers you bought from FPA, are they shorty's or tri-y style? If they are tri-y's you will definately need to modify them. All front sump engines and factory manifolds will clear the rack with room to spare.

This doesn't sound too promising for those with Crites 460 headers. Naturally, I just bought a pair....

O.K. Here's my suggestion, before buying our rack conversion I would talk to Stan and see if he would like to modify them. He may want to use you car as the setup mule. As I don't own his business I can't speak for him or gaurantee he'll do it. I want to be honest here I really don't want you to buy our rack conversion unless you understand there might have to be some mods done to the headers. I'm just won't sell a product by telling a lie so I get your money! Not a good way of business to me. I've have three customers with 60 Starliners, two of who I talked with after the rack install, they told me the really could not beleive the difference in how their cars drove.

Sorry Jan! I tried to cover most of the basics when it came to the exhaust. That's why I contacted FPA to make our headers for this conversion. I know a lot of Ford owners want the tri-y's and in the future I hope to get a set and do the grunt work it will take to make them work with our conversions.

Did anyone sort out whether the Crites 460 headers work with this rack and pinion conversion? If not, is there an alternative 460 header available?
