Cruise-O-Matic questions

Hey,

Does anybody know where a guy can find a rebuild kit for a Cruise-O-Matic tranz? I'm looking to rebuild one of mine myself after having it in the shop twice for rebuilding in the past 4 years (and the thing only picked up 387 miles between rebuilds). I've had trouble with the tranz leaking fluid, and I suspect that an incorrect torque converter was used both times.

Here's some info i dug up

This site may come in handy, helps identify exactly what you have:

http://www.autotran.us/fmABpg21.htm

These guys carry specific rebuild kits for the various years.

I have not dealt with this company, but it may be a good place to start.

Here's onother guy that sells parts and he sounds like he would be willing to talk to you on the phone. Maybe he would be willing to help you diagnose the problem.

An automatic trans is the one part of the car that is a complete mystery to me. Good luck with your rebuild.

I actually found my pan gasket at charlies. It says for a mercomatic (medium case). What's odd is I've had the same pan for all 3 trannys I've had in the car. From the original replacement in '74, the 63 tbird tranny and now the whatever it is tranny out of a 63 bird but was a junkyard tranny as it had 67 ford written on it in marker. Wonder if the small, medium and large have anything to do with the car or engine size at all? On the www.autotran.us/fmABpg21.htm page mine is the #B41. Both seem to be good sites.

Yes they do. The FX (small case) was used with most FORD engines. The MX (medium case) was used with larger engines and heavier cars. The HX (actually LX) (large case) was used with the LINC.

The FORD-O-MATIC and later CRUISE-O-MATIC was mixed in use with the F/2/S, C4 and C6 according to the application. The FMX was a redesign in 1967 that combined the FX and MX in design.

The trans is identified by the I.D. Assembly Tag.

Hey, you folks are awesome! Thanks for the sites, and especially the tranny info. I've always been rather confused about the different types of tranz.
