How does the door handle on a \'68 work?

How does the inside door handle on a '68 two door work? How does the mechanism inside the door work? What does it connect to or push on? I think I broke mine. I wanna see if I can get it back together and working.

It's been a disgusting day for me. She short of it is everything (literally) on the car froze solid last night. We went from 40*-50* weather down to single digits with wind chills well into the negatives. All overnight. Wednesday it'll be 50* again. If you want the long story look here...

Nevermind I unfroze it and put it all back together. In the process though I managed to rip my door panel a little at the rear. See what happens when it's 10* out, you can't feel your fingers, and you gotta be somewhere but the car door won't close?

Bah, it was easier when I went out earlier and the door would close but not latch. I just hung my arm out the widow and held on tight, hoping the seatbelt wouldn't let go. Then when it did finalyl latch but not open people looked at me like I was crazy when I was climbing out the window. Bah, let 'em stare...

Heck, you were entertainment there for a little bit. Not every day people actually see someone getting out that way. Probably these days a lot sit there and call someone on there cell phone to come help them out. You know, kinda like when an escalator stops midway up and you're stuck. Glad you got it working.
My driver door on the Shotrod didn't work from the outside for as long as I'd had the car until a couple years ago. Finally decided to investigate and it was just a matter of taking a clip off and screwing a rod so that it was shorter and re-clipping it. Heck back in the beginning who wanted to take time when the top was always down anyway.

Hey Cory, I've found the best way to stop old cars from freezing their door hardware etc. when you use them in the winter is to spend a day pulling the door panels off and lubricating all the mechanisms. Most old cars have had little lubrication in those areas since they left the factory. Get some good silicon grease and force it into all the bellcranks and latch movements etc. and don't forget your lock cylinders. ( I squirt glycol or lockease graphite into mine) Even motor oil will work.
Often when locks freeze people will use "lock deicer" to free them. The problem with that is they are alcohol based which thaws the lock to be sure but leaves the cylinder squeeky clean and devoid of any lubrication and the cycle starts again. Having good lube on the moving parts repells the water that freezes and jams them up to begin with. The added bonus is you won't believe how NEW everything feels when it is all oiled up.
Now I'd recommend you pull all panels off and lube the stuff on a nice day... say in August!

I also read somewhere to either use wd40 or some kind of conditioner on the rubber seal around the door. Sometimes that's what keeps the door shut and not the latch also. I had forgotten about that part.

Thanks for the tips... When it warms up I'll go over the whole thing real good. The plan for now is to finish cleaning out the garage and keep it in there, which I should do anyway.

When I put mine back together I lubed them up good with white lithuim grease and haven't had any problems since.
