A couple of questions

I just got my gal running pretty good. But i was wondering what should the initial timing be set at? The engine is a 396FE with a 274H comp cam Edelbrock RPM intake and 600cfm carb. With the vacume advance unhooked i set it at 8* i think its at about 22* when i plug it in but ill have to check again.

And any of you guys have a 4speed in your 64 gal? For some reason i cant get the clutch adjusted to the correct height i have to almost put my knee out the window to step on it. I think the "assist spring" is too stong or something becasue when i get it to relese pressure off of the fork it pops up to the stopper inside the car. If I make adjustments it seems to "preload" on the fork just a bit, I heard you will loose pilot bearings real quick and eventually loose your thrust bearing in your engine. What is the correct way to adjust the clutch? Right now i have it so when i let off the clutch you can barely wiggle the rod that pokes the fork, it is probably 1/8 of an inch off the fork, (it sits in the dent which is about 1/2 of an inch deep.

If you could understand what i just said Thanks for all the help Sorry for the long post

A couple of questions

About 30 to 35 deg total at about 2000 - 2500 rpm.
about 15 deg centrifical in the distributor
about 13 - 17 static, with the vacuum off the distributor, but plugged (use a golf tee, piece of stick or vise grips to pinch the rubber hose ... prevent a vacuum leak when disconnected from a source...you don't have to worry about the can on the side of the distributor.)

This assumes the engine is idleing at something less than 1000 rpm, no vacuum leaks and the carb is properly adjusted.

My setting were on a dual point, mallory distributor, I never did step up to anything more modern. Don't know what an FE Dura spark type would take.
