Offset shaft conversion

i had my car aligned after rebuilding the front end, the alignment was good but it kept going 'out'.

I found out about the kit and I also looked into why there was a kit. I heard ford tried those offset shafts to work with the suspension, it let the lower control arm move a little with the shocks. The offset bolt swung side to side, this movement threw out the alignment. Thats why they sell that TOE-IN STABILIZER BAR thing that bolts on to stop those shafts from moving. Heres a pic of that stabilizer bar :

http://www.gregdonahue.com/DIAGRAMS.html#p142

Greg donahue says the bar stops these things from happening :

Retains Alignment during Braking Action
Eliminates Toe-In Change
Eliminates Caster Change
Stabilizes Front End - Permanently

So i guess this means those offset shafts let those things happen.

I had the stabilizer bar and it didn't do anything.

To answer your question galaxiefreak64, the kit i put in there is simply to hold the lower control arm in place, no movement, no toe or caster - no alignment issues. I've read posts on other sites about this replacement being a bad thing, i don't know why, the rear bolt that holds the other side of the control arm is straight, also companys like gregdonahue.com sell that kit to fix those issues. I know some people that still use the offset shafts and have no problems. I just had issues after i rebuilt the front end.

Sorry the pics are so dirty, thats just some grease on there to stop the squeeking from the new bushings.

63ford406 knows of another kit a little different to that one, it uses the original big bolt that runs through the frame and a straight bolt runs through that.

What conversion kit did you use? I've seen the one advertised by the galaxie club, and I think Rare Parts has one. Police cars and taxi cabs originally came with straight shafts. I think the offset shafts were supposed to increase the softness of the ride, but resulted in the front wheels wandering.

Yeah , thats what was happening with my car.

I used the rare parts kit, i actually thought it was the same as the kit from the SoCal Galaxie guys. But it worked out fine.

I would probably go with the Socal guys for the kit. They use the original large bolt that runs through the frame, which seems like it make more sense. Since i put the kit in i haven't had any problems

I didn't see a link for these on the So-Cal site. For reasons of my own , I'd prefer not to buy the kit through the FGCOA who also offers it.. Also, since rareparts.com sells only to jobbers, I'm having a helluva time finding a dealer.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated..

how much is the rareparts kit? I could order it through a friends shop if they only sell to jobbers.

Their website doesn't have a catalog we civillians can access. You have to punch in your business's info and register to even get a peek.. Since registration is free, maybe your friend would be interested in registering at rareparts.com I'd bet he could sell suspension parts to all of us and make a few $$ in the process.
