carb cleaner vs. me
Man, anybody got any ideas about Berrymans carb cleaner? How do you use this stuff and come away smelling like who knows what? I've used the cleaner once before, it works better than anything I've found, but after soaking the body in a gallon of the stuff, I found out that your hands, your clothes, your garage, and your carb will never smell like anything but carb cleaner again. I mean, I've got parts I soaked overnight in the stuff almost 7 years ago and it STILL smells like carb cleaner.

I remember that smell- cresylic(sp)acid...best carb cleaner/paint stripper I'd ever seen. used it once 25 yrs ago, even thinking about it makes me sick : )
no idea how to get rid of the smell, not sure if it went away after a year or so, or if I just got used to it.
I think the trick would be to only use it over plastic/with rubber gloves/etc...a few drops in the concrete/on your skin, it will linger more than skunk smell. anything that is permeable needs bagged up, burned, whatever...hard to do that if you drip it on concrete though. If you find something that works, please post- that stuff restores aluminum like nothing Ive ever seen(strips rust clean too). good luck

I have been tought that stuff is good ONLY for cast iron pieces. I will not clean my carbs in the stuff ever again. I use lacquer thinner and brake cleaner.
The smell,THE SMELL!!

Actually that cleaner eats off any protective coatings there are left on your carb, Unless pitting is something you like then Lacquer is the only ay to go.
If its a holley,It will go in gold and come out grey!

Yep, when I used it last time, it kicked my tail!!! I've got a box full of 2100/Holley 2 bbl parts and that smell still lingers over that box like a black cloud.
hey, i haven't opened the stuff up yet, and the thought of any damage to the ole 4100 gives me shivers. Has anybody heard that denatured alcohol is a good carb cleaner?

It is a good cleaner, BUT you have to have a quality product though. I used some non-name brand for my rc car cleanings and was left ticked.
(I use it to clean my nitro rc cars)

I am not sure of which product you are talking about?
Are you talking about "dip can" or bucket filled with the stuff you pour in the tank?
The Cans and spray are not that bad smelling ( definatly don't like getting it on my hands...it does linger!) but it will do a decent job of cleaning small parts.
I have used the dip can; you are right, left alone, it will stink for months. I usually just wash the parts off using liquid detergent (dish washing liquid)...just some cheap stuff, no need to get any expensive brand name, it costs about $2 for a 1/2 gallon that is cheap and good enough. Then blow dry it with an air gun. That dichromate (?), zinc coating on older carbs will usually be OK, once or twice...the new carbs, I think?, are coated with some kind of anodizing (paint?), it doesn't survive.

I think I'll go with wildosvt01's advice and try lacquer thinner; I'll use the Berryman's for crusty parts. Or, maybe I'll pour it in the tank - heck, I might even get better gas mileage.
