quick 63 "?"

how many 1963 4 dore Galaxies were made with a 289 HO?

talking to one of my dads frends he had one back in the day, it was bought by an old ladey who dident want anything big for an engine, so she special ordered the 289. after about 30000 miles she got in a verry minor accident and quit driving then had the car stored. long story short, it came in to the hands of my frend who drove it well and later sold it.

just out of churiosety, how many were made and what would it be worth today if he still had it?

thanks alot guys

Ed Guy

I don't know if Ford really kept track of things like engines and that stuff back then. Only how many 4 doors etc. I'm thinking they started doing that in 65 or 66 maybe? I can't recall now what I heard on when. Sure would have been nice to know how many cars like mine with white interior were made as I sure don't see many. A lot of them being repos who changed to white.
I actually don't think it would be that rare really. Could be wrong. The 64 (of course that isn't 63) 4 door at my dads was a 289 car.

I don't don't believe Ford ever put a HO 289 in any Galaxie, all the Galaxies with a 289 were 2V. What you might be refering to is the term "Challenger V8" which Ford named it's new small block when it was introduced in the Fairlane/Comet as a 221 in 62, and quickly grew to a 260 and in 63 became a 289 for the full size cars. Prior to 63 the base V8 for the full size Ford was the 292 Y block and Ford used the name Challenger V8 as more of a marketing tool and the engines were nothing special other than being a new design.

No, he's saying there were no "HO" or "Hi Po" 289's available in '63 Gals....period. BTW, the "HO" name for Ford's didn't come along until I think the mid 80's...

Are you sure it was a hi-po 289? Back then anything was possible (just look at that '67 Country Squire with bucket seats, console, a 428, and a 4 speed). I kinda doubt some old lady not wanting anything big would make a fuss to get a hi-po 289 in her full-size Galaxie.

You said she didn't want anything big, and while the hi-po 289 isn't big, it does make a bit of power and costs more than a plain-jane 2v 289. Story just doesn't add up to me...

SO again, you're sure it was a hi-po 289? Distributors had no vacuum advance, intake would be a factory Ford piece (cast iron I believe) and it would have an Autolite 4100. Not just any Autolite 14100 though, it would be a 1.12 venturi Autolite 4100 with a manual choke and a couple other minor differences from a standard 4100.
