FX Cruise-O-Matic

My 1966 Galaxie was delivered yesterday and looking things over, I compaired info from the ID plate and found my car has an FX Cruise-O-Matic behind the 289-2v engine.

A look at the trans and it is a pan fill model, certainly not a C-4, as there is no servo housing on the passenger side.

Just wondering, can anyone tell me about this trans? I suspect this trans is a weaker one than a C-4. Years ago, I had a 1966 Ford Custom with a 240 6 cylinder that had a C-4 behind it.

Thanx in advance for your comments.

I can tell you it is hard to find someone who can rebuild it correctly. When they work they shift nicely not much for hot rod purposes.

-BROADER PERFORMANCE-

Having a FOM-COM-FMX is not a death sentence. It is a much tougher design than is given credit for. All earlier designs can be upgraded with service parts from the later FMX (67/ ). This trans was used into the eighties.

FX Cruise-O-Matic

Thanx for the replies, guys.

Is my FX the same length as a C-4? Will I need a different x-member and driveshaft if I swap out the FX for a C-4?

thanx

FX Cruise-O-Matic

In '66-'67 Ford made a trans called the "MX". I've never heard of the "FX" in Galaxies before (but, that's just me...). The MX is VERY strong, has an 11" band for 1-R gears. It often was equipped with higher-speed-stall torque convertors for that "jetaway" takeoff performance. These torque convertors 'lock' at 1500 RPM instead of the usual 1100 RPM. It makes for a real quick, effortless feeling when driving, but at 55 MPH (2.75 rear) it gets worse gas mileage than at 65 MPH because the convertor locks at 58 MPH!

FX Cruise-O-Matic

Let's see. I had a Cruise-O rebuilt locally here and the guy did a good job. I bought another Galaxie with a Cruise-O that shifts fine. For a cruiser it is very smooth. For hot roddinf or racing I would go another way!

FX Cruise-O-Matic

My trans is for sure an FX, definately not a C-4. The door code says my FX was made in Kansas. Cannot find any hi-perf suggestions for the FX, going to swap to a C-4 when the time comes anyways.

Just curious to know if my FX is the same case length as a C-4? Food for thought when/if I have to get a new trans mount when I make the switch.

thanx

Re: FX Cruise-O-Matic

i have a 67 galaxie with a 289/2v with a fx trans. BroaderPerformance out of tx offers 2 rebuilt the fx for cruisers. 2 handle more power i was told by them that they can build a fmx trans with the tail housing from your fx that will bolt up w/out having to change transmounts or drive shafts. i checked because i plan on swaping a built 351w(425hp) in place of the the 289. hope this info helps
