what\'s in your trunk???

Yesterday I ripped out the old and nasty carpet out of my 70 XL conv. and know I am wondering what I should do with it. If i should coat it something. It is pretty solid and just a little bit of rust here and there. Oh and the are two holes which look like drain or breathing holes. So I guess I should make sure that those stay open.

So what kind of coating or anything like that would you recommend?

I just primed mine and painted with satin black speckle paint, the new trunk mat hides most of the floor in mine anyway.

I cleaned all the epxy and loose stuff up. I had no rust to repair, just a little surface rust which I cleaned up an coated with Ospho. I then taped up real good and primed with Rustolium primer. I top coated it with Duplicolor Grey and White spekle Trunk paint (they have it at Autozone and Advance Auto). The trunk paint should be coated in light coates with ample drying time between. I used about 6 or 7 cans, these trunks are bigger than they look.

I then put a new trunk mat over it, got that at Mac's Antique Auto. A real shame to cover up such a nice looking trunk.

I pulled all the junk out of mine, prepped a few rusty spots, and then sprayed some rust converter on there. Let that sit for a while then I coated the entire trunk floor with a liquid sound deadener followed by a couple layers of 60 mil thick dampening mat. The insides of the quarters were cleaned up, prepped, and sprayed with black undercoating. Eventually I plan on custom carpeting, panels, ect, I just haven't got to it yet.

Go to Kermit's picture hosting site as well and look in my folder at the several trunks I've done... Not to pat myself on the back or anything, but They look MARVELOUS! Simply Marvelous!

http://www.fordmustang.co.uk/fm-pix/...ls.php?album=4

Clean the SH!T out of them, if rusty, use Rust Mort of some version or another. Then Scuff and paint, then use a decent Black automotive undercoating, (It deadens unwanted sound as well as protects from damage, 3-4 cans 16oz should do it) THen some nice Teal or Aqua, or green Spackle Spray, to make everything look nice and original.

There's even a pic of a trunk I did on a 69/79 Galaxie XL Convertible....

You might want to put some rubber plugs in those drain holes if they don't have any. The rain and puddles will splash up and get your carpet all wet and then promote more rust.
I would do like the others, clean and sand it then coat it with a rust inhibitor of some kind.
When I read the topic I thought it was asking what is in the trunk, like spare tire etc. Sure glad that wasn't the case, I would have a long list!!
