Is your P/Steering pump hot?

I rebuilt my 64's pump/reservoir a couple years ago. I was admiring things under the hood last night after a ride and grabbed the pump and was suprised at how hot it is. I would have thought that the oil would act as a bit of coolant and that it would dissipate heat better. Maybe it is picking up heat from the block.

The next time any of you are out and about , would you mind checking your pump for heat. I'm curious if this is normal.

Yes, they can get hot.

A lot of the newer, severe duty vehicles, like cop cars (Mustang as well as Crown Vic's) and I think the Cobra regular and "R"...came with them. In some cases, its just an extra piece of squiggly tube in the air stream (front of the radiator or behind the headlights) in other cases it can be a little mini-cooler, with fins, like a transmission cooler.

So did my '68. Just a little U shaped tube with fines that mounted on the AC compressor bracket above the PS pump. The PS cooler line started leaking one day so I removed it, engine compartment looked cleaner so I left it that way. My '67 had the same pump and gearbox and came with no PS cooler, so I figure it's fine without it. Though the '67 didn't have AC so I wonder if it was a thing only AC cars came with??
