Speedo jumping and odometer not working

I'd check the cable first. Make sure it isn't kinked somewhere...might take a look at the driven gear too?

Since you didn't mention it...I'm guessing you haven't changed, moved or replaced anything under the dash or near the cable, transmission lately or had any warning signs that things were getting a little shakey?

Start at the tranny first. Chances are it's a little dry on lube or the gear itself is damaged. Lubricate it for sure. Good luck...

He is talking about the cable...I guess? There a maybe some teflon or graphite lube...I've always used the stuff you find at the parts store. The housing is the armored outside casing that covers the flexible inside transmission cable.

If the cable maintenance doesn't solve the problem and you think the actual speedometer is the problem, personally I would have it redone by a shop. It can probably be done or swapped by the average ham-handed grease money, but not by "this" one. There are a few things I just feel are out side my area of expertise...automotive clocks, speedometers are near the top if the list.

I agree, as mentioned in the earlier message, check the cable first. It could be dry, need to be lubed, or kinked, binding on something as it turns in the housing...or both - the inside of the housing may be catching and holding the cable as it turns, then when it breaks free the stored torsion on the cable makes the needle bounce and fluctuate.

I think the interior of the cables are lined with some kind of non-stick sheath, if its damaged you may want a new cable ...I think Dennis Carpenter sells them in different lengths.

My 67 did that and I put my hand up under the dash and the speedometer cable was loose where it hooks into the dash.

Graphite was the dry lube It's a powder so that it doesn't gum up inside the housing. When you pull the speedo cable you'll be able to take the inside piece out of the housing it's held together by a clip clean it with a dry rag an the pour a little graphite on the cable and put it back together you should be able to turn it with your hand before and after and tell the difference. You can buy a new speedo cable but this worked for me.

If the above mentioned does'nt work.. Since the speedo is working and the odometer is not . A problem that I had was: there are keepers on the main odometer shaft, and between the individual number wheels in the odometer. When either of these keepers slip out, you will have this problem.
