I did a little work on my 62 Galaxie last night and decided to take it for a spin. When I got out in the middle of nowhere and could see that there were no cars coming. I decided to see what it would do in the 1/4. The 1/4 mile is marked on the highway so the State Patrol can use a plane to catch speeder. Now the engine is a 390 Thunderbird Special, tranny COM, 3.00 rear with 15 inch tires instead of the original 14's. The engine has never been touched, but it does smoke some. I ran it up to about 5K before shifting. I was just about at 80mph when a truck with a combine came around the next corner so I had to shut it down. I didn't think that was too bad for a stock , tired engine and 4000 pound car.

I ran my bone stock 64 XL, 390, COM, 3.00 gears, 14" tires with trunk full of tools and spare eneded up with a 17.4 @ 75mph. I didn't powershift or anything, just punch it at the green and let it shift. I was suprised.

Were you surprised by how fast it was, or how slow?

It is interesting to hear that. I am in the process of selling my Corvette so I will have the funds to buy a decent 64 XL 500. The Gal seems to be slower, at the strip, than I would like. But that's what money's for. If I get the Gal this summer, I will take it to the strip and see what she turns.
You could take the Greg Cook Edsel approach and throw in a 396 FE and tall gears (4.11's I think) and see a big improvement

I am almost finished with my 396 rebuild, tri power, nice cam, long tube headers, 4 speed, and 3.89 geared detroit locker. Can't wait to run the 1/4 to see the times in comparison. Maybe I'll get into the 16's!
