why I got this car --- Photos Added

I am still struggling with getting my car to run right. So while I'm waiting to get back to the shop, the car is my garage at home. Each night this week, after dinner and homework, my 12 year old daughter and I have been designing and building a center console to house a new stereo and a few gauges. The glove compartment idea didn't work due to the depth and AC lines.

She made a mock up out of cereal box cardboard and masking tape. We've cut some 1/4 inch plywood to match her design. After some measuring, cutting, trimming, sanding, and error recovery, we're ready to put the thing together. Maybe we can get the cover material on this weekend.

We'll set up a new fuse box while we're at it to accomodate the radio and gauge needs. You know, 12volts, 12volts switched, and a good ground. These things are well within the understanding of my daughter and she loves the challenge of making things. A few hours under the dash with my daughter...

That's why I got this car.

That's great! It's the same thing with me and my daughter. She's almost 7 years old and has 4 older brothers but she's the only one outside helping me with the car. She loves to sand, grind, and vaccum up all the junk. I wish I could get the boys away from their computers long enough to help out more. They did help remove the front clip though, they liked using the air tools. I guess that was more fun than a video game at the time...

My 7 year old got to do the "first repair" on my Gal.... I pulled the back seat and sent him through into the trunk to pull the retaining clip on the trunk cylinder since the key was lost. He and my five year old "encourage" me to get out there and work on the "race car" with them - it is a big piece of why I bought mine too...

That's how it was with my dad when I was a kid. I was out there with him all the time getting greasey. He never did any kind of restorations or nothing. He was usually rebuilding engines for people or messing around with something mechanical. Too bad I couldn't remember all that stuff from back then! But nothing wrong with being daddy's "boy"!!

I got 3 boys, but one is definitely a tinkerer like I was as a kid, and he always want to help out. makes any job more fun.

Cool on the console. I did mine a few years ago to put my cassette player and CB into. I had to make a new front last year to add an 8 track player which I still don't have hooked up. I have a regular console so it sits between it and the dash. I just didnt' want 10 things hanging under the dash even though I probably have enough old screw holes from the past that no new ones are needed.
I bought some gauges to put in one day and like your idea. Only I don't have enough space to add those also, so guess I'll be hanging them like the ol 8 track players of yesteryear. Keep her busy and learning. She'll appreciate it down the road and might get the opportunity a few times to tell the guys what is wrong with their car and listen to them tell her there's no way that's the problem. They find out later on their own that the girl was right. I've been there. Nice to know at least enough that you don't get ripped off at the parts store or a garage or something for sure!
Well if she has an older car or learns a lot on the new ones. I'm at a complete loss with these new cars!

Very cool stuff, I am happy for you and you will always have those memories as will she. I bet your wife is also wearing a big proud smile. Keep on DAD!
