Hello/any advice?

Hello everyone, I'm new to the board. I have a 1968 XL fastback w/302 (at least its a V8, right?).

A problem just came up this morning and i need help determing what it is so here goes:

I started up the Gal and put it into reverse to move it into my garage. When i started backing up i heard a loud clanking/grinding sound. I thought GREAT I JUST RAN OVER A SHOVEL. I got out of the car and looked underneath and there was nothing there. So i got back in a popped it into drive. As i pulled forward i heard that loud clanking/grinding again. I believe it has something to do with the front wheels themselves (i don't have power steering or pwer brakes...so maybe something is wrong there?). If anyone has any idea as to what it could be or any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

-Nicholas

Hello/any advice?

Maybe a wheel bearing or the brakes are worn and they are metal to metal? Or even a pad fell out of place because a retainer is missing or something?
My first thought was rearend til you mentioned it was in the front.

Could be the front U Joint, or like Deb said, front bearings, brakes etc. If you can, jack the front end up, pull the tires and turn the front wheels by hand to see if you can isolate the noise.

Thanks Deb and Scott, I'm going to prop it up in a couple hours and take a look at those things you mentioned. I've been saving up for a new crate engine....i guess i'm gonna have to use some of that cash now

sounds like a broken ring gear tooth in the rear end.... BUt that would be so if the noice is in front... check those brakes and bearings...

Hello/any advice?

Check your rear brake shoes. Same thing used to happen to my old merc convert. The bottom adjusting assembly came apart for some reason and kinda got caught between the shoe and the hub.
Makes a real bad graunching sound. Scared the s#%& out of me.
Easy fix though.
