A couple stupid questions on a 64 Gal...

Unfortunetly yes, $1200.00. The parts needed like a new converter and valve body had to be ordered from different coast lines and were not very cheap when they did find them.

Not sure what green dot does. I know there was a reply in a post I started a few months ago that explained it though. So Puttster....do a search on cruis-o-matic and your questions should be anwered. The modulator has a small screw on the drive line side of it. You can turn it in upto 1.5 turns. If you need a shift kit I can give you the phone number for the company I purchased it from. Only cost me about $30.00 for the part but atleast twice that in long distance calls trying to find one. He had a few more at that time.

Gentlemen,

CRUISEO-MATIC OPERATION-

The CRUISE-O-MATIC (1958/ ) is a dual range transmission that allows either a first or second gear start.

The earlier FORD-O-MATIC (1952/57) was a single range transmissionwhereas first gearhad to be manually selected or initiated with WOT.

The later FMX (FORD-MERC-DUAL RANGE-196 is a much stronger transmission and parts can be retrofitted back to the FOM and COM to make it a stronger transmission.

In my old 63 the tranny would shift into 2nd gear really quickly, then into 3rd but you cant really feel it, its a little "sludgy" or "soft"

I like the 64 shift pattern better than my 94 TBird shift pattern

In the 64, when you start out in D2, it will shift to 3rd, which is great for bad weather driving (just leave it in D2). Of course, since the 64 never goes out in nasty weather, who cares?

On my 94, when you select D2, it will start, and stay, in 2nd gear. It does not shift to 3rd unless you shift it manually. (I think that my old 72 LTD was like this as well.)

But, everything with an upside has a downside.

Engine braking is improved in the 94, as you can just drive in D2 when the road conditions are really bad, and let the engine slow you down when required.

In the 64, when you are in 3rd and driving over 30 mph (I believe), if you shift to Low, the car will drop into 2nd gear, not 1st. But, when you hit about 25 mph, the car will drop into 1st rather quickly.

Another nice feature is that in D2, the car will not roll back on an incline.
