72 turn signal question

The turn signal on my 72 Galaxie 500 has pooped out. Doesn't seem to be a fuse issue as the hazzard lights still work and the fuses look good. The handle still sticks in place and pops off when I turn the wheel. Has the switch gone bad? How might I fix this?

Re: 72 turn signal question

Sounds like the t/s flasher is bad. 4 ways use a different flasher. There are two flashers under the dash. If I remember right the 4 way is easy to find but the t/s one Ford hid.

Re: 72 turn signal question

change your flasher unit. It's small and about $5 bucks.

Re: 72 turn signal question

Strange. I talked to the Pittsburgh-area classic Ford specialist and he thought it was the flasher too. Then, next day I take the beast for a spin and the turn signals worked again! The day they didn't work it was roughly 96 degrees and super humid. The day they worked again it was roughly 80 and cloudy. Could it just have been too hot for the poor old flasher? Maybe some solder expaned slightly and lost a connection temporarily?

Re: 72 turn signal question

You may have something there. Non electronic flashers use a bi metal strip that heats and cools to "make and break" the cricuit. All that heat cycling for years will wear it out or at least change its tolerances over time. It may be yours is out of spec. Changing it would propably be a good idea.
