'63 window crank removal?

Ok, I have a '63 4der and I need to remove the door panels but I can't figure out how to remove the window winders/cranks? The spare set that I got with the car have a hole in the center and a screw to install/remove them, but the ones on my car look the same but i'll be damned if i can see how they attach, the center is solid and chrome, not a cover over a screw.

I tried to look behind the panel for a clip or roll-pin but I can't see one.

I'm lost??

Re: '63 window crank removal?

there should be a C clip or U shaped clip on the backside. The handle goes over the shaft and the clip keeps it in place. They make tools to remove it but I can never get them to work so I take a long skinny hook and pull the clip out. If you use your finger or flathead screwdriver and put pressure on door panel to view the back of handle you will see the clip.

Once you have them removed. If you need any pictures of how they are laid out for the re-install, I have some pictures saved from when I removed mine.

Re: '63 window crank removal?

Speaking of windows...(I did try to search btw) anybody know of any sites for pics of the insides--regulator et al? My window mechs need refurbishing but I'm kind of stumped at how to go about it. I was even considering aftermarket power windows...

thanks

Re: '63 window crank removal?

You could also use a thin rag and drag it behind the window roller and it should catch on the end of the C clip and you just give it a short yank. It'll pull it right off there. Just don't yank so hard you send the clip flying somewhere never to be seen again!

Re: '63 window crank removal?

Any one have a spare window regulator drivers front crank mechanism for a 63 ford station wagon? Mine is toast.

Are they all the same? Would a 4 dr mechanism work?

When I crank mine down it goes down about 1/2 way then I have to push the window down a bit then it catches again. When I crank it up I have to do the opposite. Is it just a bad tooth on the gear?

It might be just a bad area that needs some grease. I've had the door panel off but at that time it was only to adjust the door button so it would open the door when pushed in. It hadn't worked almost the entire time I owned the car and finally decided it was time to investigate on how it all worked. I say try some grease first and if that doesn't work...
