New Guy Says Hi, 1964 Galaxie 500XL Convertible

Hello all, Names Danny, got a 64 Galaxie 500XL Convertible ,390FE w/3spd Cruis-o-matic. My Dad's had it since the mid 70's but I've kinda taken over it and am beginning on a winter restore adventure on it. Pulled the motor/tranny,gonna freshin those up. Also doing all bodywork and new paint exterior wise. Interior is nice though will be getting new carpet and kick panels. Don't get me wrong the car was a looker before but my dadnever drove it ...always garaged it. I never understood that. If you had a great car like that plus it being a convertible I'd drive it every nice day I could. So Now that I have the helm now I'm putting all new gaskets, oil and fuel pumps, hot cam and timing set, rebuild the heads, new seals for the tranny and high stall converter. The main problem I was having was the car was leaking like crazy...mainly from the front of the tranny. I will also try to rebuild the power steering system myself. I'm also adding a factory A/C system as well. So anyone who's reading this and has a setup in there galaxie I would love to see pics of where you mounted the drier, and hose routing to the firewall!.. Also by joining this forum I'm looking for ideas and suggestions for my rebuild, like cam size, where I can find some shorty headers to fit my convertible...etc.. so again great to be here. -Danny

Re: New Guy Says Hi, 1964 Galaxie 500XL Convertible

Welcome to the forum and great to see another '64 galaxie here too! Not to mention one that's been in the family since the '70s! I've had mine since 77.
Don't have anything in mine but the all natural AC which was a little toasty when we were living in the desert.
Lots of knowledge here so ask away and also do some searches here for info before you ask as it might of been covered before at one time or another.

Cool Re: New Guy Says Hi, 1964 Galaxie 500XL Convertible

Welcome Danny. You've found a good place to hang your hat and enjoy the company of fellow Galaxie fans. Lots of info to be had here, so crack open a cold one and get some pix of your 64 for us to see. (I just now got some photos my 66 on here today) I'm not the sharpest on computers and get frustrated easily

Peace, out, Dave

Re: New Guy Says Hi, 1964 Galaxie 500XL Convertible

Cool guys! nice rides here's mine. A pic from 7 years ago (and 40LBS lighter) ha! So I was gonna say I bought a entire 390 front pulley/bracket setup for A/C and Alt and Power Steering off a 1965 galaxie. If anyone with a 65 or newer Galaxie has or could take some pics of how everything is setup. (The Alt bracket is a lower engine mount NOT upper) any pics will help as I've never dealt with tensioners on a old engine like this. thanks! -Danny

Looks good to me! Cheater, picking out a pic before the pounds. LOL I'd do the same but the only ones with the car pounds ago were from 1990. hahaha But we both looked better then!

Thanks for sharin the pic. You might do a search for Chooch65's post on his '65, there might be a pic of what you are looking for in there. Can't miss which post it is as it's probably 15-20 pages or more long.
Heck I just went and looked it up for ya. Here's the thread.

Only about 200 more than you like to talk and that's probably cause you went to visit your dad and missed a few days a while back! LOL
