New to the board with a question.

Hi every one. I just found this boad recently and it sound like there are some smart Galaxie owners on it so here is my question. I recently picked up a 65 Galaxie. for some reason the headlights wil randomly go off, or some times go on and off or flash on and off repeatedly. The grounds seem fine, so light switch or dimmer maybe? Anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it? Thanks

Skootz

Ground would have been my first guess. Try running a separate ground to make sure. (you can use a jumper wire without drilling or cutting and splicing. Then try a wiggle test. Turn on the headlights and litterally "wiggle" or shake the wires from the headlights to the dash and see if the problems occur. Other than that I would suspect the switch has a short. Disconnect the switch and check the terminals for corrosion or signs of damage (melted plastic burnt wires etc. If none are present try out a new switch. SWEET RIDE by the way.

Re: New to the board with a question.

Its a bad headlight switch!
Ford has an internal circuit breaker built into the switch.
WHen they go bad they will heat up and start to flash the headlights or
not come one at all!
Good luck

btw --does it have halagin headlights --if it does -you need to run them thru a relay--they draw to much currant for a stock headlight switch--

Re: New to the board with a question.

Welcome to the board and Congrats on your choice of Gal! First of all, check out this thread,
http://www.fordmuscle.com/forums/gal...t-working.html
Second, take some time and figure out how to use the search function (the one in the DARK BLUE BAR right above your Welcome box that shows your messages, etc. Then figure out how to post pics, pretty simple too.
You will then be able to find anything you want! But if for some reason you come up with something that has never been seen, done, tried, used, fixed, broken or whatever on this forum you will be able to post pictures of your NEW thing and generate a lot of good suggestions and "Try This", or "I Did This" info.
Again, Welcome!

Re: New to the board with a question.

Welcome aboard. Nice looking 65 you got there. The correct way to make the problem go away is to relay them. The easy way is to just put in a a new switch. My 66 was doing the same thing as was my 73 Ranchero. A new switch fixed the problem on both cars. The Ranchero repair has lasted 10 years now, while the Galaxie was just done about 1 month ago. I don't know how long the new switch will last, but given the the fact that I usually only drive the car once or twice a week, summer months only, I may not ever have another problem. If it does not last very long then I will have to do the relay thing too, but so far so good.

Re: New to the board with a question.

So that is what a 65 Galaxie wouldv'e looked like if Hurst had anything to do with it huh? Well, if they are halogen (and they probably are) you will need to put in a relay, the halogens draw to much current and heat up the switch, causing resistance to flow, and eventually just ruin the switch. Now ask me how I know. I found a good site on this stuff. Just do a general internet search on the subject. Meanwhile Ill try to remember what link that was and will post it if I do. Just search on "headlight relays" in the search box.
