trying to decode a cruise-o-matic

Hey guys, I recently bought a cruise-o-matic transmission from a
gentleman from around these parts, who says it was pulled out of a 64 Meteor
merc.I am planning on putting it in my 62 galaxie 500. I was wondering
if any one has the knowledge to decode the info that is on the side of
the tranny. I wasn,t able to find any i.d. tag anywhere on it, so this
is all that I have to go on. Thanks for any help. The stamped code read
as follows... C3TP-7006-A 13 Also the bell housing
had..........C1SP-7976-A 3 Sheffield fordmoco TP

Re: trying to decode a cruise-o-matic

I don't know much about decoding a transmission. I can only tell you the C3=1963 and C1 = 61. The TP -is for Mercury or something like AE is Galaxie and ME is Mustang. Someone I know will correct me if I have that wrong.
Here's a couple sites to ID by pan gasket.

Re: trying to decode a cruise-o-matic

If you find any numbers that are "stamped" into the case let me know. I have a list of Ford trans codes (ID tags) from the early 50's to the late 70's. The raised (cast-in) numbers are casting part numbers. What engine did that Merc have?

There were actually three CRUISE-O-MATIC trans in this series during this time period. The DUAL-RANGE TURBO-DRIVE was LINC only so that leaves a possibility of either a small case CRUISE-O-MATIC or medium case MERC-O-MATIC (DUAL RANGE). C1SP on the bell identifies it (bell) as a 61 BIRD and that makes it FE specific. C3TP on the main case identifies it as a light truck trans, more than likely a MERC-O-MATIC. The 64 MERC METEOR was a full size MERC.

Compare your main case length with the diagram below and it should identify it.
