power steering pump w/swap?

k, here's the deal. i'm installing a 5.0 EFI in my power-steering-equipped '63 Galaxie.

if i have a new pressure line made up to adapt to the newer model power steering pump to my existing PS ram/valve setup, will it work correctly?

i know the computer will regulate the idle instead of needing the pressure valve setup like the old pump had to the carburator.

so i'm guessing it'll just be plug & play with the new hose??

guidance please.

Re: power steering pump w/swap?

I think you had better check the hydraulic output pressure of the new and old pumps. The requirements of the old hydraulic ram could be quite different from a modern system.

Also, I don't know what you mean by a pressure valve setup to the carburetor from the old pump. My pump just has two hoses to the control valve. Nothing else. Now there usually is something with the A/C to up the idle when the compressor kicks in. Is that what you are thinking about?

something like that yes, but when you turned full lock it would kick up the idle to prohibit stalling i guess. it took some time to get used to parking with that setup. all stock from what i can tell? my car did not have a/c and this was a pressure line from the pump to a solenoid on the throttle linkage at the firewall. i hadn't ever seen something like this before either?

you can see the pressure line going back to the solenoid in this pic. the line comes out of the PS pump and runs along the top of the valve cover, it's oversprayed white (by the previous owner).

That was just a small block thing. FE's didn't have it. Unless a/c equipped. I think the new pumps put out too much pressure. But you can find a pressure regulator. Check with ABS in Orange, CA.

Nothing like that on mine. But as 63ford406 says, this was apparently on the 289s (and possibly straight 6's) only. I have a 390 FE in my Galaxie.
