66 rear ride height (I got a saggy rear...) UPDATED

I have a saggy rear but only on the drivers side. What would cause this? The car has been on jack stands for a while and I finally put the wheels on so I can roll it around and now the drivers rear is sitting about 3 inches lower than the passenger rear.

This is a 1966 Galaxie Convertible. There was a thread on 1965 ride height but depending on where the measurements are taken, it won't really match the 66 as the rear wheel wells are different.

I don't really care about what the stock height is, I just need to correct this issue. Would shocks cause this if one were bad? more than likely it is springs, I would guess.

Mine measures roughly 27 on the passenger side and 24 on the drivers - that is from the ground to the middle of the wheel well. I do have the Mustang Bullit wheels (17" - with 55 series tires - I think the width is 235).

How expensive are rear springs? I was going to do the rear suspension last but I guess that just got accelerated. How hard are these to change - I have done fronts but never rear before...

thanks
Stacy

My 64 has that problem also. It improved some when I replaced the rear shocks and springs. I still need to replace the front same and maybe then it will sit level again. Those are about the only 2 things that I know would cause that.

You can check Leaf springs and coil springs and see if they have them for your car. They were the cheapest I found for leaf springs on mine so might be the same for yours.

Re: 66 rear ride height (I got a saggy rear...)

I looked to see if they had them at the link I mentioned but they don't. In fact the only coils they have for Ford period is for Mustang. Guess they don't think about these cars having coils on the back after '64? How do you sell springs for classic cars and be that limited?

Oh well, shop around at pricing and go for what you think is the best.

Re: 66 rear ride height (I got a saggy rear...)

Could a bad SHOCK cause that much of a drop? I pulled the driver rear shock and it appears to be shot - I can compress it with my hand. On top of that, it was a pain in the a$$ to remove since you can't get an air tool on the top nut!!

I am going to get new shocks tomorrow and order the springs from NAPA on Monday if the shocks alone don't cure it Any rear shock suggestions? And NO air shocks thanks - hate 'em...

I think it's a combo of both and probably more springs than anything else. I had flat air shocks with the sag on one side so can't say it was just one shock causing it.

That's not a bad price and think others have used those shocks.

Auto Zone has them for $52 if there's one near you. You can get them on line too.
