seat belts

got a friend wanting to put front seat belts in his 63 Gal convertable(bench seat). If anyones done this did you do the "drill and hope" method or is there a place to start measuring from to get the best placement?

Re: seat belts

In my 62 Gal I did a modified drill and hope. I laid out the belts to see where I could place them so they would reach and fasten in the right place. The "male" end was fastened to the bench bucket seat bracket and through the floor. I laid out the other end where it fasten and checked where to drill. I would jump under the car and make sure if I drilled there I wouldn't hit any cables or other lines. I moved it around a little checked again and drilled. Make sure you use grade 8 hardware.

Re: seat belts

I wonder if the '63 has the same mounting places as the '64? Has he looked under the car to see if there are places that something screwed through the floor? On the '64, at least with bucket seats, there are eye bolts that screw into the floor, one near the hump and one that is between the scuff plate in the door way and the seat right about at the rear edge of the seat. Might check and maybe all he needs is to mount and no hole drilling.
The original seat belts have a hook on the end that hook onto the eyebolts on a '64 at least.

Re: seat belts

Hey there guys,
Dont try to depend on just a "by guess and by golly" method of popping holes in the floor. If by chance your ever in an accident (God Forbid) you want them to work and not ripp out of the floor. Then you go through the windshield.
This site has full kits very reasonable for retro-fitting older cars with seat belts that will work correctly for your setup.
Im sure there are others that are resto quality ($$$$) but this IMO is the best all around price/quality sets on the net.
Seat Belts

Here are some install instructions. Your specific instructions may not be this particular link, but this gives you and example.
Retrofit Seat Belts Installation Shoulder Bolt Anchor Point Your Classic Car, Hotrod 3 Point Seatbelts

Just remember that your trying to save your life by installing saftey belts, dont do it half-assed. Ok??

Re: seat belts

Just remember what someone posted here in an earlier discussion about seat belts in old cars. He said to be sure to anchor them solidly so they will hold you right in front of that non-collapsable steering column! Ouch!

Re: seat belts

'63 Galaxie's already have provisions in the floorpan for front seat-belts from the factory (I know this because I just added fronts to my '63). Easiest thing to do is crawl under the car, find the seatbelt "washer plates" already welded to the floorpan, stick something up from underneath so you know where to cut the carpet topside, then just stick a bolt through. Easy as pie (well, ok, took me an hour when I did it). Rears are more of a guessing game, but all cars from the factory in '63 were federally mandated to have mounts already in the floorpan. Good luck!
