Headlight switch

I finally had to replace my headlight switch yesterday as it was dying quickly. I've had the switch for almost 10 yrs just never bothered putting it in other than to test it out before I bought it from napa. Well now i find out that it isn't the right one. I guess we didn't check to see if the dashlights work or not. I looked in the dennis carpenter book and they have the one that looks like what i have listed for a 62 or 63 no 64s. Don't know which one this one might be though.
The good part was I thought I had put halogens in, I had headlights i could see again! LOL
I think I have a spare one from a junk car i raided in CA I just have to dig under about 15 computers to get to the metal tool box it's in. So if anyone needs a switch I'll sell it for what i paid. Around $15 + shipping. Napa has them now at $38. Just have to figure out which one it is for. My rod doesn't go all the way in, it's a little over 1/4 an inch est too long.
At least I know that I can see again at night though. Just never thought about the switch causing some of that. What finally made me change it was it was getting hot to the touch and even when i went to pull it after sitting all night it was hot! The rheostat? spring thingy came out on one end so was probably shorting it out.

Re: Headlight switch

HAY Deb,
I don't need the switch, but I just felt bad about nobody responding to your post, and thought I'd do it just to keep you from feeling like no one is reading. I mean, you respond all the time, and what goes round comes round.

Hope you have a wondermus day.

Re: Headlight switch

Awww gee JC. I do the same thing though, a reply without the answer is better than none at all. Plus if there is no replies the thread gets pushed to the bottom and might not ever be seen.
Don't bother me to keep it. Not like it takes up much room and always work as a back up. Who needs to see how fast they are going anyway huh?

Re: Headlight switch

Do the headlight relay thing and the switch will stay cooler. Halogens needs relays and they will be even brighter. You might be able to put a spacer or washers between the switch and the dash. I had to do that to my wiper switch when I converted to delay wipers.

Re: Headlight switch

Only problem is my dash lights don't work with this switch. I had thought of using washers though.

Re: Headlight switch

That was a waste of time. Moved all the computers to get the big tool box and all i had in there was the wiring harness and fuse box. Bummers, guess I'll be finding a headlight switch now. At least it would be new i suppose and shouldn't need replace for another 45 yrs or so.
Has anyone ever found a source for 2 speed wiper switches?

This is like the new one I have. If you look at the lower side where there is the brassy colored metal plate. There is only one prong there with the plate held with 2 rivets, on mine there are 2 prongs each with their own plate i guess it would be said.

eBay Motors: New Headlight Switch 60 61 62 63 64 Ford & Mercury !! (item 350014235266 end time Feb-10-08 08:54:30 PST)

Guess this tells me what it's for at least.

Re: Headlight switch

I found an NOS switch on ebay and got it for 12.50+ shipping and it came today already so the Shotrod now has headlights and dash lights again.
I need to adjust the headlight though, they are all over the place. It's been a few year and since then it's had new springs added also which didn't help with the aim of the lights very much.
