70 Galaxie Front Disc Brake Conversion??

Anyone have an idea where I might purchase a front disc brake conversion kit for a 1970 Galaxie 500?

Re: 70 Galaxie Front Disc Brake Conversion??

I just had to pop in and say 'yeah' to another late model Galaxie.

I have drums all the way around for now. They stop my 69 real well if not a bit touchy in the rain. An upgrade to discs is on the long list of mods.

Are drums all that bad? Modulation is weird compared to a disc setup. I am not road racing so they are fine for now. Am I just lucky that mine drums feel strong and capable?

Yes. You are lucky. I was going to buy all new parts for the drums, including the drums themselves since all 4 are disgustingly un-turnable, but for the same cost of re-doing the front, I'm converting to Scarebird setup. For the rear, I bought drums, shoes, lines, and cylinders and replaced those, which works great. The biggest advantage I'll see from the disc conversion is the adjustment... I spent three hours tweaking the rears after I replaced all those parts to get them to stop evenly. My auto-adjusters don't work (for now! MWA HA HA HAAA)

Re: 70 Galaxie Front Disc Brake Conversion??

I did a bunch of disc versus drum comparison reading right after I got my car.

In general, the discs are much better at modulation as well as how they react to high operating temps. Disc brake modulation has a more linear feel than drums which are somewhat 'self-energizing'. High temps also affect each system differently. When drum brakes see excessive heat, the drum expends and creates a larger 'reach' for the shoes. On the other hand, disc brakes rotors will have less of an expansion (due to exposed braking surface to ambient air) and what expansion there is, will direct pressure toward the face of the brake pads.

For every day driving and some of it a bit aggressive, my all-wheel-drums work about as best as any. They can bring my Gal down to a stop pretty quickly. Just don't ask me to repeat those hard stops too many times in a row.
