Chokes - cause more fuel consumption or not?
I thought of this with all the hoopla over chokes in another thread. Do they cause more fuel consumption? Your car is sitting there idling, sometimes 90 mph (exageration of course) and going no where til the choke kicks off. That's if you let it sit til it warms up.
Then there is the jump in it, run it til it idles on it's own and go. Sometimes this doesn't work so great, depending on the car. You might need to use the brake and gas at the same time on that first stop when backing out of the driveway.
So, does the choke have any effect on fuel consumption or is it's only claim to fame is making it easier on us drivers to get out of the driveway? Which of course was it's main purpose of existance.
Deb

Re: Chokes - cause more fuel consumption or not?
The biggest problem with a hand choke is forgetting to take it off after the car is running. If anything, I would think the auto choke is possibly more of a gas waster than a hand choke, except for the fact that with an automatic choke you don't get into the problem of forgetting.

I'd prefer a hand choke, at least you know they are working. I hadn't thought of a hand choke in ages.
I'd probably be the one to forget just like the e-brake. Back out of the driveway and wonder why I can't go forward. Duh!

Re: Chokes - cause more fuel consumption or not?
While we are on the subject, when the idle is high and I give the gas pedal a stab and it slows it way down, what is actually happening there??
