Re: FE engine question ?

The pushrods and if I remember right, oil travels through one of the pedestals into the rocker arm shaft along with the pushrods that oil travels up the outside of them. Or it's an optical illusion that the oil is traveling up the pushrod.

Finally found the diagrams.

Hey mon Deb,
The oil DOES go through one of the pedestals into the rocker arm shaft, and then out a hole at the bottom of each shaft into the bottom of each rocker arm bushing.

And though it is not shown on the very nice diagrams that you posted, the oil then returns to the oil pan through holes in the lower right and lower left hand corners of each of the heads.

The oil in the non-FE engine DOES travel up through the INSIDE of the push rod to the rocker arm, but I don't know of any instance where the oil travels UP the OUTSIDE of the push rods, optical illusionary or otherwise.

Re: FE engine question ?

OIL comes through the HEAD into the pedestal....

CLEANING these places is paramount in keeping oil going to the top of your FE.

The FE pushrods are solid

P.S. Sorry I'm late... Just came back from movies

Re: FE engine question ?

you are so right -i was just out looking at them and the pedistle bolt holes are not round--their elongated on the bottom-- oil comes out of head up around the bolt into the rocker shaft--

i knew i knew how it worked -- but just seemed to have an old man moment--

back in the late 60s i raced a 390 [dirt track] blwe more than one of them-- you could buy a used 390 for 200 dollars in any junk yard - ready to run--

200 for motor -- weekly wage after taxes 69 dollars--

gas 24.9 a galon- cigs-25 cents a pack-- draft beer at local watering hole 25 cents-

Hey Mr. DH,
As I recall, there is only one pedestal that carries oil to the rocker arm shaft, and it is not the elongated hole that makes it possible so much as the "necked down" bolt that goes through that pedestal. Make sure that you get the proper bolt in the proper pedestal.

While we may be getting older, we're also getting better.

Just keep saying that over, and over, and over, and over, and...
