Thumbs up New guy with a couple questions

Hello all, I'm new here, just recently acquired a '64 Galaxie 500XL, which is also my first Ford. Its a 289 automatic. A little ratty, but solid, and besides I like a challenge. I'll get some pics or a link up soon. I also have a '72 Chevelle I am restoring, and was looking for something to drive until it was finished when I found this car. It needs some TLC, but I and my wife (surprisingly) are excited to have it. So please be kind, (and patient) as I'm Ford illiterate.

-My first issue is that the windshield needs installed. The old seal is rotted and falling apart, and the glass is only partially holding on. I'm looking on JC Whitney for a new one, but there are 7 different styles (A,B,C,D,E,F,G). Anyone know which one I need off hand? Does it use the lock strip? So far they've had the best price on them. Also, do you need any kind of glue/adhesive? The seal alone seems ingenious enough, but I wasn't sure if it alone would hold the glass in.

-Also, it is still using a generator. Can I change it over to an alternator setup, and if so what is involved? Question I hate to have to ask, but....the generator is a 12 volt system, right???

Thanks for any input!

RIGHT ON!

Congrats on the new family member and Welcome to the FM family

Yes it's a 12V system, they actually work exceptionally well

But a one wire chevy alt or a ford alt with external regualtor upgrade is easily done.

You can contact macsautoparts.com or Galaxieparts.com or any number of places for a windshield gasket...

OEM part# is C2AZ-6203110-A

Price at galaxieparts.com is $79 bucks... Only ONE version you need...

Any more Q's don't be afraid to ask

Re: New guy with a couple questions

Most of these gaskets are produced by only a few manufactures but there is a wide range in the quality of the gasket. I bought a gasket for one of my 61's from whitney and it was very stiff and hard to work with. Took three trys to finally get it installed.
Bought one from Dearborn classics for the one I just installed and the rubber was very easy to work with and the unit slipped right in on the first try. It is also very flexable after it is installed so it may be that it will last longer.
There is a black sealant in a tube that I got from an auto glass place that I use on mine to seal it and to make it go in easier.
