Re: 1965 Galaxie 500 - Cruise-O-Matic to Toploader swap

As all have said if your not in a hurry take your time and look for the right part at the right price, my 65 is a extreme cheapo build, not quality just price wise I looked for the GOOD part I wanted and didn't buy it until I got a deal I wanted, I have less than $85 in all my 4spd goodies (everything but tranny and clutch) just look, the good deals are still out there to be stumbled upon, but it did take me almost a year to get everything together at that cost, of course you can spend $500 and have most everything in a couple of days...

Re: 1965 Galaxie 500 - Cruise-O-Matic to Toploader swap

I have a 68, 428, 4 sp galaxie and in that car the bellhousing is unique in that the clutch equalizer bar pivot is located about the center of the bellhousing (fore and aft). Don't know if that is the same for a 65-66, but that is the kind of stuff that can make a swap difficult.

ALL 65-68 Galaxie clutch set-up's will interchange.
Perhaps 69-70 also.So I would think I would check all the years to be sure

Charley, what letter is in the 5th position of the VIN? This will tell you what engine came in the car. Post it here and we will let you know.

Re: 1965 Galaxie 500 - Cruise-O-Matic to Toploader swap

65', 66' the orphans. Ha! I've seen only five 64's up here in 6 years..and three of them are mine. Hardtop, vert, 4 door parts car. Lots of 65' through 68' running around though. Granted most of them are high school kid cars and have 4 doors but there are a number of nice ones up here. I know the 65' and maybe the 66' had rusting frame issues and we used to gravel instead of salt the roads so that might me why there still seen around here.

Back to the post, a C-6 should cost you around $1200.00 add in a B&M shifter and some lokar stuff for the kickdown and you are in to the whole project for less than $2K. Not quite as fun as a 4 spd or 5 spd to play with but a good solid replacement for the crud-o-matic.

Like the StarKist commercial, I gotta say "Sorry Charlie", if the 5th digit is a V then your car originally came with a 240 CI six cylinder.
