Re: Turbines or 5-spokes (wheels)

I didn't think the turbines looked mom's car but then again, I am old. LOL I hated those type wheels when I had them on an Elite, they were a pain to clean. Other than that I liked them.

Re: Turbines or 5-spokes (wheels)

While you are waiting...

Something I haven't thought about in a while...with everyone automatically getting a set of "Mag Wheels" everytime they get a special car, I have seen very few wheel treatments that keep the factory wheels and go for a set of wheel covers or hub caps.

I remember getting a set of 69/70 Mustang/Torino factory wheels which had the argent or chrome inserts, beauty rings and hub caps...for a factory set-up they were and still are a pretty nice looking wheel. Kind of pricey if you go looking for a set, a lot of times its actually cheaper to buy mags .

If money is the problem, then think a little lower down the food chain, you can still put together a nice looking package that will make yor car stand out from the crowd.

ever think about a set of 'baby moon" (sometimes called dog dish, poverty caps) - then add a set of beauty rings? Or even "smoothies"?

Smoothie Hubcaps, Baby Moon or Moon Hubcaps Wheel Covers Kustom Car Moons

15" Stainless Steel Beauty Rings

Snap-On Discs

Paint the factory wheels black, set the hub caps and beauty rings in place and call it done for now! If you are lucky, you may be able to snag a factory set from a junk yard or drop by the local dealership(s). Sometimes they'll have a few sets taking up space in the shop.

The only draw back with baby moons and beauty rings .... there is no way to keep them from disappearing over-night...Plus, if you are too energetic installing the hub cover, it'll leave dents or dimples - which takes away from the "smooth-look".

They used to be pretty cheap, but like all things today - prices are much higher. Still, they should be way cheaper than any set of wheels you actually have to pay money to get.

Re: Turbines or 5-spokes (wheels)

I originally wanted something like the regular chrome wheels with the baby or full moon caps but to me $75 and up per wheel seemed way too much and out of my range. That is what was on the car or what was left. Most of the chrome had flaked off from the wheel rusted.

I ended up going to American Tire and saying what's the price on your cheapest, shiney easy to clean wheel. $25 per wheel. They are very common but must have to do with the price I think.

You are right beo, there aren't many that have the old stock wheels anymore. I actually had 2 sock 15s on the back and chrome 14s on the front. One of the chrome ones in the back broke at the weld and then the other was bent so I dug in dads junk pile and found 2 15" stock style wheels to put on. I like the stock also but prefer the shiney.

Mazlem,

I ended up going through the same dilemma as you. Small budget and lots of different ideas. I looked at the Vic Turbines as well but in the end decided to go with black steelies and poverty caps of the "Men In Black" variety. I got the caps from the local boneyard for $5 a piece and a couple of rattle cans cans of black paint to dress up the steel. It gives the car sort of an "I'm gonna eat your lunch" retro look. Whatever you decide to go with make yourself happy with the look, after all it is your car and you will be the one driving her.... nice ride by the way.

Re: Turbines or 5-spokes (wheels)

Thanks for the tips all. As to why my current choice is between the turbines and 5-spokes - I wanted to get the 5-spokes, but then dad saw the original car I linked with the turbines on ebay (that's not my car. Here's mine with it's 14" steelies atm: LINK.) He thought I might want to use the turbines since we've already got a set.

There's plenty of other stuff to spend $ on for the car, so I thought maybe the turbines would be something nice till the finances settle down an it's ready for the 5-spokes. The turbines need tires though; maybe I should stick with that plan but get used tires so the extra $ spent isn't so much.
