Was trying to remember about that. Oh and the oil filter, while we are on points, is the motorcraft oil filter the FL-1A? I could remember the one part and that's all they had that looked to be the right one. PH-1 for Fram? Those fancy doo-dads at the stores only go back to like 89 or something and the book wasn't any better for motorcraft filters.

Re: What year did 390 show up in the trucks?

Yes, FL1-A for Motorcraft and PH8-A for Fram. Yeah, that's a great thing about Ford V-8's. There's a lot of parts that are the same across engine families from the 50's to the early 90's. I buy PH8-A's and Autolite 45 plugs in bulk.
Know what you mean about those *%$# computers at stores. The other day I had a guy actually ask me if my car was a Galaixe or a Galaxie 500 because "The computer says they're different." ...ok chief, whatever.
So I walked behind the counter, got the book, found the part #, went to the back and got the part myself. He just stared at me jaw dropped. I simply smiled and said "Yeah I used to work parts while in school." He rang me up in icy silence.

To the original question, '67 1st 390 trucks, '76 the last. The only difference in car vs. truck 390's is compression, and on some, beefier crank snouts. 360 is just a 390 with a 352 crank in it.

Re: What year did 390 show up in the trucks?

The Napa I went to in MD didn't have to look up the points at all, just walked to the back and grabbed some. I said wow that was quick! That's when I learned they were all the same. But as the generations at the parts stores get younger the more difficult it's going to get for them and us.

I think the points are all the same from 57 to 74 for all motors. Jeff

Yes, napa is great! I walked in and asked for an oil sending unit for an FE and the guy just walked back and grabed one.....No book, no computer.

If I went to Pep Boys or Advanced, I would have shut them down for a day when they try to tell me Merc didnt make a 410.

Re: What year did 390 show up in the trucks?

FE, I worked for Ford dealers from 66 till 75 as a new car/truck mechanic or line mechanic. We weren't called techs back then. LOL. And we even made 50% of flat rate then. I have all my Ford manuals from that time. Ford pick ups got the FE engine starting in 65 when they also got the twin I beam front suspension. 65,66 and 67 were 352 2 barrel carb, no 4 barrels. 68 till 73 were available with 360 or 390 2 barrel carbs only. Then 74 till 76 390's were available with a 2 or 4 barrel. Also no pick ups came with 427's, ever. If you have some official Ford documentation on this I would like to see it. This is as the truck came from the assembly line, not what some dealer installed. Not trying to start an argument but just quoting what is in the official Ford manuals.

Re: What year did 390 show up in the trucks?

I'd love to see your official manual's on it.. as I only have a 69 Ford manual, but I got the S code and whatnot out of Motors Manual. They Could be wrong, but my 67 F-250 (I was the second owner) was all factory and had a 390 in it... and it was an early 67 because it was made in 66...

It had a 390 2V (If I said I had the 4v version I didn't), When I rebuilt the heads i checked teh bore, the block and heads all matched date code wise and the bore was 4.05....

But the rest of what I put up came from foggy memory and Motors Truck Manual...
