1966 Ford 428 Identification

Is it a correct assumption to say that original 428 V8's can be identified by a hand welded "A" on the block? Do all of the old 66 and 67 blocks have this? I know the standard 428 and CJ blocks are different, and I had heard that the Cobrajets had a "C" and the standards all had an "A".

well..........is it?

Re: 1966 Ford 428 Identification

Most but not all standard 428 blocks have the A or upside down V but some of the early ones did not have this marking. Some CJ motors had the C some had the V or A and the same with the police blocks.
Only positive way is to measure. You can also remove the center freeze plugs and see if there is a 428 stamped on the inside. But again most but not all would have this marking. My 66 428 came out of a TBird and is has the upside V marking but nothing else that would identify it.

Scott, Mine had the rough welded A. It was not part of the casting, just a rough hand done job, where the flexplate goes.

I got my info from:

Engine Information

hit "engine identification"
