Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

I can't tell you much on the horn itself as far as hanging but it should honk regardless of where you push on it. That's "should". There is supposed to be a plastic piece with 3 "prongs" on the underside of the horn ring that holds the horn ring on, maybe one of your "prongs" is broke which is what is causing it to hang? I would think you would of noticed that though when you had it off there.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

there's a rubber donut that goes in there too. if yours is missing or smashed, it probably accounts for part of what you're explaining. Mac's Auto Parts has the replacement plastic thing with the 3 tabs, and the rubber donut.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

I didn't see anything like that pad in my horn setup. It says 63-66, maybe that's other models and not '64 galaxies or something. I do have the spring and 3 prong plastic peice though.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

Yeah, that rubber donut is under the metal contact which makes the horn honk when contacted with a 1/4" wide metal piece that sticks out under the horn ring. Its purpose is to insulate the metal horn ring from the horn honking circuit inside it. As for it being "smashed" a bit, I dont know what that would have to do with the fact that the horn doesn't honk when the bottom ring is pushed, but at this point I am entertaining any and all suggestions. I will look at that donut. The prongs/hooks on the plastic ring, are all intact.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

You replaced the horn, darn it, can't think of the name now, little doodad with the little spring. Hate when that happens and i was just looking at them. I always called it a horn button but it's actually a _______? Aaarrrrgh!

My horn is funky also. I need to actually put them back on the car but the only way my horn honked good was mashing right in the center to remove the horn ring. Any other time it was the sicko low pitch horn that did the honking and now and then the louder high pitched one would chime in.

Horn Brush!! That's what it is. What am i going to do if i make it to age 60, can't remember nothing now and not even 50 yet!

How bout the relay, did you say you changed that already also?

I would think if that donut thing is mashed it might cause your horn to hang. I don't even remember mine having one and that looks thick enough that you'd notice it for sure. Also if it were missing would your horn honk all the time or is that just to keep you from possibley getting shocked by the horn ring?

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

I really need a good blow up diagram of this whole assy. That would really do the trick. I am afraid things get lost in my translation this way.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

I'd take my horn ring off and see what all is there but I have problems with my horn honking when pushing at the bottom or anywhere but the center. I haven't replaced the horn brush yet though.

You had mentioned "hanging" so was thinking your horn ring isn't sitting like it should.

Like you say it is difficult to translate sometimes what you are wanting to say in words.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

OK, I think I have the problem solved, but I need some help still. I need to know if the tension spring inside pushes against the plastic retaining ring with the 3 prongs, or is it more in the center and pushing the metal plate in the horn ring. I think this spring is wrong, and is pushing the metal plate away from the constant contact which is at the top. What I really need is 65/66 guys with completely working horns (pushed in the center, sides, AND when pushed down on the bottom curved bar on the horn ring) to look at thier spings and tell me just what is it supposed to be pushing against. My thinking is that if the spring is pushing against that metal plate it is pushing it away from the constant contact point at the top so it only works if pushed in the center. NOW, if I put pressure on the horn button at the top, and I push down on the bottom to honk the horn, it contacts the brushes at the bottom and honks. So it is making sense to me that the spring is pushing against the wrong thing, breaking the constant contact causing unsure connection when honking the horn. I just hope my explanation isnt confusing.

Re: Steering wheel horn ring spring

I thought the spring was to prevent constant connection? Other wise couldn't the horn sit down on the contact and constantly honk or everytime a bump is hit or something?
