buckets

I am thinking about switching my front bench seat out for buckets in my 70 Galaxie 500. I already have 2 front bucket seats from a 67 cougar that i could use, I would just need to know how to go about mounting them.

Re: buckets

Thats one thing I didn't get any pics of.....Theres a rib spot wedded to the floor about were your front seat bolts would be, its better to start from a flat surface so I removed that rib and replaced it with a piece of 2 inch square tubbing in the location that the front of my buckets would mount. Just remember to make mounting points as wide or widder then your seat tracks at the rear and weld them in, brace well, you don't want to hit something and have the seats break from the floor. You may want to also set those seats in there and look at them first, they maybe to narrow for such a wide car.

Re: buckets

I am not sure how much the 60-64 Galaxie floor differs from the 70, but this info may be of some help. I installed buckets in my 62 Galaxie buy building a seat riser that bolts to the contours of the 62 floor and provides a flat mounting surface for the seats. My buckets came from a Subaru and the first thing I did was convert them to have the same bolt pattern as a Mustang sense I have a Mustang and wanted some interchangeability. The bolt pattern should be the same on the Cougar seats you have.
Converting Subaru seats to a Mustang bolt pattern
Once I had the track width I built a seat riser so that the seats would have a solid and level mounting point.

Here is the seat riser mounted on the floor. I used the two outside original bench mounts and then added two 3/8" mounts on the inside. The angle iron that the 3/8" bolts are attached to spans the floor and then a solid piece of 1/8" plat still goes on the underside of the car and serves as a large washer and floor reinforcemnt.

Here is a picture of one of the bucket seats installed

here we have it both buckets. They look right at home in the old Gal.

Re: buckets

I was looking at some pictures posted by bcuz1998 on another post and saw this one

The floor boards on his 70 don't look that different from the floor boards on my 62. A platform similar to the one I made should work well in your car.

Re: buckets

Be sure to use grade 8 hardware to bolt everything in.

Re: buckets

thanks alot guys thats alot of information! I kind of see where I can go with this now. My only question is, when you bolted downt the inside bolts, did you atually screw them in through the floor pannel? how did that work?

Re: buckets

What I did was install the riser with the original outside bolts. then I punched and drilled the inside holes and made sure everything fit. From there I welded the bolts to the riser. sense the angle iron spans 6" on the drivers side and 8" on the other side I new the load of a seat occupent would be well distributed along the floor pannel. Also by using some plate steel (2" wide, 1/8" thick, and as long as the angle iron on the riser) on the underside I was abel to even better distribute the load. These plates are not welded in but rather bolted in with the two nuts that hold down the seat riser. They serve the purpose of being both a reinforcing plate as well as taking the place of a washer. Let me know if I can help in any other way

Re: buckets

My bench bucket seats out of a 74 LTD were about as tall as I could handle in my 62 galaxie. Meaning I didn't want to mount them on a rack that would raise them more.

I went into the old floor mount holes for the original bench seat and then drilled two more on the inside near the tunnel for the new bench bucket seat.

I used the biggest washers I could find on the inside and outside, grade 8 safetbolts all around like you use for seat belts.

It's worked fine.
