For this reason, I rarely order parts from the Autozones or other chain parts stores.

I agree with big brakes were standard on wagons and fleet (police and taxi), but I think you could order them on other cars also. BTW... my car 66 390 4-v, z-code has the smaller brakes.
Go figure

Oh yeah, I'm sure you could if a person knew enough about cars to know what they were doing and what they wanted. Not to mention Ford likes to toss in some oddball stuff anyway on their own, back then and probably now also. Or in order to keep the assembly line moving, if the bin is empty of 2 1/2 and coordinating parts then they probably used the 3"... maybe. Not sure how that would work but wouldn't surprise me.

Remember, this was the 60's ! I knew many guys who worked for Ford in the 60's, and I swore I'd never buy a car in case one of them had worked on it !!!
As a perfect example, my 65 didn't have the E-brake pedal installed from new ! It was only added by the second owner, using the correct one, but he said he had to drill the hole for the light as that wasn't there either, although all the cables etc. were installed, just the pedal missing ! Probably one of my mates who was supposed to put that in !

Re: 66 galaxie rear brake cylinder kit

Thanks everyone but unfortunately I did not have a chance to take a looksy at the brakes because I was out car shopping. I need a daily driver so that was more important than working on the gal....I do plan on buying the cylinder kit and not bother with rebuilding it myself. I can't wait to get her on the street again. It is always fun riding around town with her, she gets many compliments.

Re: 66 galaxie rear brake cylinder kit

Hi everyone....I just had time this past Saturday to take the brakes apart.
I as expected, confusion, confusion, confusion about my brakes on my part.

As per another member: Pull a front drum. If the shoes are 3" wide you have the HD system with 31/32" rear cylinders. If front shoes are 2-1/2" you have standard brakes with 7/8" cylinders.

I did not pull the front brakes but the rear brakes instead and they measure 2 1/4 width. The inside of the drum is 2 1/2 inches.
The rubber bushing for the original brake cylinder bushing states wagner lockheed FC-14492. The brake shoes state Bendix 31626.
The cylinder states wagner lockheed FD 49266.
I cannot find anything on either of these parts on the internet.

So is it fair to say I do have the 7/8 all around and NOT 31/32?

Re: 66 galaxie rear brake cylinder kit

thanks fellas but here is a bit more info.......NAPA stated FD 49266 which is my original cylinder part# in their computer is for non taxi 31/32.
The book stated the same thing. The ford dealership was no help at all.

So was my car a candidate for the "Ford spare parts" assembly line?
should I go with 31/32 since NAPA is more accurate that other parts store?

Re: 66 galaxie rear brake cylinder kit

Update on the brake project...Rear left wheel is done, I was pumped about doing the right rear side but O'reilleys sold me two left rear cylinders...I took the RR off so I can match it up to the original cylinder..Hopefully they will not have to special order it because I want to get this brake task done this weekend.

Re: 66 galaxie rear brake cylinder kit

Glad you got her done, congrats on a job accomplished there and now you're ready to move onto the next project.
