dyeing upholstery

My carpet is gold and I need it to be brown. I'd like to try dyeing it before replacing it. Anyone have any ideas on this - what kind of dye, etc?

Re: dyeing upholstery

I did the fabric seats in my 62 and the back seats and door panels with vinyl die. I have also have touched up faded carpet, stuff works great!!!! As with most things like that the auto-oparts store stuff is ok but the professional grade stuff is 100 X better

Re: dyeing upholstery

Whatever, don't concoct a brew using the supermarket variety RIT dye, as it is designed for Cotton materials, and you ought to have nylon.

Re: dyeing upholstery

I bought a spray can of black dye from a local upholstery shop and am going to try it on the rear arm rests of my 63.5. I've never done it before, but I'll let you all know how that goes. My understanding, at least for vinyl, is that the cleaning first is the most important step.

That is the most important part!!!!!! I bought some special vinyl prep before I sprayed my seats.

here is a shot of the back seat and door panel the only thing that is still the factory color is the burgandy section across the top of the door panel.

This is not the best shot of the cloth front seats, but you get the idea. there were light grey before I sprayed them

Their is a primer that you use first. My sister-in-law works the parts counter at the chevy dealership here and she said that they don't carry all the different color arm rest for cars only one color black and they spray the different colors with a vinyl paint and it has a prep/primer it can be bought at the dealership she says without the primer it will flake off. I'm just going by what she says as I haven't done any but you might want to look into it first.
