Re: Rear leaf spring sagging

The guy at the frame shop here told me that rearching my springs was a temporary solution, at best. He said within a year they'd be sagging again.

Is that inconsistent with what you guys have found or heard?

Re: Rear leaf spring sagging

Can't speak from experience but have heard it's temporary. Not sure just how long temporary is though. I'm sure it wouldn't last near as long as new.

I sometimes think like mentioned earlier that most all come from the factory like that. I dont' think I've ever seen the passenger side sag and it's odd to think that an average size person would cause the sag on the driver side over the years but I'm sure it must as what else would cause it on the one side only unless the total weight of the car is off balance left to right. Like having the steering column and pedals all on the driver side. Hmmm maybe that helps it along also. But in the back? One of those mysteries.

If the car is being sold it's a good low budget method that isn't in anyway harmful to a buyer. I suppose also it would depend how often it was driven too possibly.

kevin, does Leaf springs and coil springs have springs for your car? They are inexpensive there and I have no complaints with mine except that the driver side sag is still there. I haven't replaced my front springs yet either though.

Re: Rear leaf spring sagging

I have seen a weak front spring cause the whole car lean to one side. Place a floor jack directly under the center of the front crossmember and take the weight off the front. If you have a bad rear spring it will the be much more obvious.

Re: Rear leaf spring sagging

Figured out the problem. The driver side shock is sagging. DOH! I didn't think it was a shock problem because the rear shocks are brand new.

I bought some KYB's and even called KYB to get the model number that will fit. It is the same model # as a regular 4 door model. I am thinking that maybe my wagon is heavier than 4 door sedan and it caused shock to sag. Unless I got a bad shock which seems rear.

Shock only has 100 miles but has been sitting on car for 4-5 months.

Re: Rear leaf spring sagging

I would think it could be possible to have a bad shock even though new. Just like anything else, there are some bad ones that get through and you were one of the lucky ones. That's much better than messing with the springs though.

All is new in the back of the shotrod but springs and shocks are original and shocks probably replaced in 1975 before I got the car when the front end was rebuilt. So could go either way on mine. One day I'll get to it. Need to replace the a-arm bushings badly. Have them just want to get springs and shocks first and do it all at once.
