Master cylinder replacement

Since I started to work on the brakes for my galaxie, should I also replace the master cylinder? I do not have a brake booster, should I buy a booster for my car while I am at it?
I am not sure if it will work since I do not know where the vacuum hose would go..

I have drum all around

thanks...........

Re: Master cylinder replacement

If you don't have power brakes already i wouldn't bother with a booster. As for the master cylinder, you could get a new one or you could just wait if it's not leaking and seems to be working well.

Napa and Kragan have a rebuilt MC for like $30 and probably Autozone does also as most of the time they all sell the same one at a dollar or two difference.

Re: Master cylinder replacement

if you replace the master-- get one for a 1967 its two chambers --and split the lines to the front and back brakes--
drums all around

So I can ask for a 1967 galaxie500 master(non booster) and just put that puppy in my 66?
I do not have to bend the lines or anything like that?
What does splitting the lines do for the car?

thanks,

Ac

Re: Master cylinder replacement

You run the rear brakes to one reservoir of the MC and the front brakes to the other reservoir. I believe the larger of the 2 reservoirs is for the front brakes. This is so if you have a wheel cylinder go out or some other reason for a leak you are only losing the brakes that that line is connected to and it only drains the one reservoir. Unlike the single that you have. You have a fluid leak you lose everything.

I think you will only need a splitter so that you can continue 2 seperate lines to the MC.

Re: Master cylinder replacement

thanks for the info...I think I will wait for it to leak before I replace it with a 67 gal MC.
