Fuzzy Dice and other danglies illegal

At least in some states. I knew this already but wondered how many of you also knew. I saw this article/blog about it which reminded me of the police that showed up at my house to fill out paperwork for my stolen radio had told me. They said if a police officer wanted they could ticket me for the dice hanging on my mirror and for of course, the bottom of the letters on my license plate being obscured. This is also true of those "blue dots" in the center of tail lights that look like jewels if a cop wants to be nit picky.

My dice aren't fuzzy but rather 2 Vegas plastic dice about 1 1/2" square. The license plate frame is from the 100 year of ford that they were selling at the Knotts all ford show. They are too small for the plates so I had to cut out the section to show the tag but there was no way to cut away the section to display completely the numbers/letters on the plate.

This is for anything dangling on the mirror though, not just the dice because of obstruction of view. I didn't care much for the fuzzy dice I had for that reason, they were too big and blocked my view.

Re: Fuzzy Dice and other danglies illegal

Well darn, let me find that article about it again.

The intro blog from Old Cars Weekly:

Man Busted for Fuzzy Dice in Michigan

Monday, January 5, 2009, 11:39 AM CST [General]

What the Heck?
Did you know that you could get a ticket in Michigan for simply having a pair of fuzzy dice hanging from your rear-view mirror?
Let me start this ol' blog off by saying that I am not a big fan of fuzzy dice. They simply aren't my cup-o-tea. However, I do have a "thing" for little hula-girls and bobbing head dogs. In fact the dash of my car looks like a Luau that has gone to the dogs!
Maybe it is simply the fact that growing up and carousing in Mayberry we didn't have a good casino or floating craps game in the area for me to develop a love of dice...but, then again, I guess we didn't have many hula girls either.
Anywho...I was surfing the web today and ran across an interesting article about a poor sap that was pulled over and busted for the crime of having a Tweety Bird ornament dangling from his rear-view mirror.
According to the article, a man named Lonnie Rae Davis was pulled over by the Michigan police after they spotted a Tweety Bird ornament dangling from his rear-view mirror. The article goes on to state that Michigan law forbids dangling things that "obstruct the vision of the driver of the vehicle."
Davis has apparently appealed his conviction stating that the Tweety Bird didn't obstruct his view and that the cops had no right to pull him over...or confiscate the open alcohol container, crack cocaine, wad of cash, stun gun, or the .38 caliber handgun they found in the car after they stopped him!
He argued that the cops had no right to pull him over in the first place since the Tweety Bird ornament did not obstruct his view, therefore the stash of guns, drugs and hooch they found in his car should not be held against him.
As it stands now, the fuzzy-dice (and dangling Tweety Bird) ban stands in Michigan...and Mr. Davis, is headed off to jail...and not the one where Aunt B. serves her famous fried chicken and apple pie!
You can check out the whole article HERE.
Does anyone know of any other states with similar laws? I'd hate to get pulled over for my hula girl collection and have the cops find the stash of Snickers Bars that I illegally smuggled in from Canada!

Deadhorse would have been able to check it!
It's about fuzzy dice.

By the way, the same laws apply here.
It's not about obstruction. It's about distraction when they are hanging there flopping around.

I wounder if an Elvis fan Cop would tell us to remove our Elvises?

Re: Fuzzy Dice and other danglies illegal

In WA it's illegal to any part other than stock on a car. I have a cop friend that started checking this when he was working on his Suburban and he said it's enforcable.

There are probably a lot of laws that are only enforced when they want to be boogers or "we" are boogers to them.

Re: Fuzzy Dice and other danglies illegal

Been a law in Calif since the late 40s early 50s. Started when guys would hang baby shoes from their rearview mirror. Blue dots are a no no too. Got stopped twice in my 46 Ford for them. Also got stopped for a trailer ball blocking the rear license plate.
