67 Galaxie - Stereo Help

I have a 1967 Galaxie 500 Convertible. It runs great and looks great, but it's not a show quality car. It still has the factory AM Radio in it and it doesn't work. I want to upgrade the car to current technology with an AM/FM radio & CD player, but I want it to blend in to the dash and not look out of place.

My two questions are: 1. Are there modern stereo units on the market that are able to blend in with the 1960's dash and 2. What is the best place to mount and install such a unit.

Thanks for your help.

Thumbs up Re: 67 Galaxie - Stereo Help

Hi, I mounted my cd am/fm radio in the glovebox of my 63 conv for exactly that reason. Its a bit far to react, but most half decent cd players now come with remotes, so it doesn't worry me at all.
I removed the old cardboard glovebox liner and used that as a template to make a new glovebox out of MDF. This allowed me to add a couple extra pieces to mount the cd player. Then painted the new box flat black and fitted it to the car. Also fitted a new aerial which is actually a cable that runs around and underneath the windscreen moulding (so i didnt have to cut any extra holes in the sheet metal.)
The whole job looks great and can be removed at any time to take it back to stock.

Re: 67 Galaxie - Stereo Help

Rich & Galman: Thank you for your responses and ideas. I have thought about both options and I'm thinking about using the dash slot. I have friends who have used the glove box and like it, but I hate to give up that space.

Thanks,

You can have your original radio rebuilt with modern, digital guts, AM/FM and use it to control a remote mounted CD changer.

Re: 67 Galaxie - Stereo Help

I built a small box to hang mine under the dash on my old '67. That dash piece isn't reproduced, so I did not want to cut mine. You can even buy a kit to mount it under the dash, here is an example.
