Cruise o matic adjustments

well yesterday i took her out for my second cruise.. Still shifted to 3 gear late. i had to be at about 50 when i would get this hard shift. I tried adjusting the kick down linkage but had no effect. also this tranny was completely rebuil all new stuff could it be a mad modulator or mis adjusted? gotta get some info as i will be trying to get this fixed yesterday morning. after that i will redo my carburetor as i have a hesitation off idle and i think its the accelerator pump.. any tips and facts on the tranny adjustmens? i do know some modulators have internal adjustments too.. it runs good, and gets all gears drive and reverse good no hesitation at all.. all tips will be appreciated..

If this is a fresh rebuild, then I would take it back to tranny shop and have them make it work. I expect any reputable rebuilder will warranty their work, even for a limited period.

Re: Cruise o matic adjustments

it was rebuilt some time ago by the previous owner who i got the car from.. The tranny and engine have less de 200 miles on them so i am thinking a possibe miss adjusted governor or just dirty or defective modulator.

Re: Cruise o matic adjustments

My first one to do the slow to 3rd was a backyard tranny that had laid around a long time. 50-55mph and finally shift. One day it made a whirr snap and that was it. The torque converter had spun on the shaft. After that it would only work til it got hot.

The last trans started doing the same thing after I had it apart and put new seals on the shift lever and new filter. I didn't know about torque values or anything so just tightended the valve body and called it good. On this one though I didn't drive 50 to make it shift and depending on temps outside I could go a half mile up to 5 miles or more befor e it shifted. It had to warm up and after that it shifted normally til it got cold again. I think it had a blockage so fluid had to get thin before it worked right.

If yours is truly a new rebuild, take it to the shop that did it and have them do the adjusting. The shop that did mine is a 1 yr or 10k miles (something like that) warranty. I'll hit 1 yr before I ever hit those miles!

If the kick down was adjusted too much that it depresses the lever it affects 1st 2nd shift I noticed with mine as I didn't have a tension spring on it to start with. So don't think the kickdown has any effect as far as your problem with 3rd.

Re: Cruise o matic adjustments

i would if i knew the shopt that rebuilt it was still in business.. the guy that owned the car had his own shop as far as i have known by his family where he dedicated himself to build older vehicles. The person past away and thats how i got this car for such a good deal from his family, they wanted it out if the houses yard so they asked a cheap amount of money for e to get. it is a fresh rebuild as he was restoring this car. the engine is fresh as well as the tranny.

Oh I got ya. Might try to find a local non-chain place and have them check it out. Someone that knows how they work and all.

Re: Cruise o matic adjustments

Re: Cruise o matic adjustments

Just yesterday I replaced a defective modulator in my 1975 C4 that is in my 1970 Bronco. It would shift real hard, especially 1st to 2nd, chirping the tires. I knew chirping 35 inch tires with a locker on dry pavement can't be good on the drive-train.

It's very, very easy to replace. Some types are adjustable, rotate them one turn, drive it, and re-adjust. Mine is fixed (non-adjustable) with a one bolt bracket holding it in.

I also ran some tranny solvent through it, changed the fluid, filter and adjusted the bands. Everything else was in good shape.

Re: Cruise o matic adjustments

Same late shift with mine, so I will be hoping with this thread. Friend of mine suggested the governor needed cleaning (emery cloth on the inside?). He also said to put up the rear end on jackstands and run the wheels very fast and that would fix it. Haven't done either though.
