Ever Notice how hoses don't last?

Used to be hoses would last 20 yrs or more. They might get hard and a little cracking on the outside but still didn't leak even though they needed replacing.

I mention this because it was only 3 or 4 yrs ago that I changed the piece of hose that goes from the hard line to the gas tank and now it's leaking with a big crack in it. I was wondering why I would smell gas back there and looked down in to see if the filler neck was leaking as it was broke loose when I got munched and had it repaired. Didn't see nothin. Never saw any puddles either. But then I rarely have a full tank of gas so it must of leaked from the sloshing of the gas when I'd park the car or something and then I would smell it. Rest of the time was too low to leak even with sloshing.

Guess they probably took the good stuff out of the rubber or it's this modern gasoline that causes them to deteriorate quickly.

Probably a combination of both.

Re: Ever Notice how hoses don't last?

Wonder what level of fuel it is at the hose going into the tank? lol It's draining now from the hose leak. I have somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 tank in there.

Did get the new speedo cable in though. Just have to put the screws back in the dash cluster. Another case of only needing to do 2 things. Although I knew the speedo would be a royal pain as it was last time. With the swingaway it's easier to disconnect the end on the tranny and pull the cluster out to get to it.

Chinese rubber.... that's why there is a billion of them!

I use fuel injection hose and clamps now on everything like that. Way tougher and although more expensive it's only a few inches so one foot of it goes a long way for a few more dollars.

It's mostly the "new gas". They have new hose, I don't remember the SAE number for it. Got to ask for it or they will give you the old stuff.

Re: Ever Notice how hoses don't last?

Thanks I'll have to remember to ask. Don't want to be doing that every couple years or so. Which reminds me, maybe I should toss in my extra piece for my drive to Oregon tomorrow since the fuel pump end was changed around the same time.

Yep its the gas. The content of ethenol or whatever makes it cleaner ive heard is the issue. The gas these days also goes bad faster then ever.
If you go to kragen they have some Goodyear fuel injection hose. It has a blue liner in it. That stuff is going to stand up to the gas alot better even though you dont need the high pressure rating.
Dont run though, its about $6 a foot.....

Re: Ever Notice how hoses don't last?

The stuff I got evidently for the fuel pump hoses is dif. Says fuel/emmissions on it and 50 psi. But when I'm rich and famous and need another chunk of hose I'll have to get it. Save money in the long run I suppose when not having to change it every year.
